Quote: waynel "Not at all. I say this as an FE lecturer of 7 years. The BTEC offered by Wakefield at present is typical of what is currently served up in many schools accross England. It is a watered down version of a full time course offered at a college. 18 modules delivered by 1 or 2 teachers/lecturers is sub standard when looking at what a college offers (the same modules delivered by at least 5 or 6 staff members). A BTEC delivered in the way Wakefield are will be spoon fed with a view to simply get students to pass. This is the main reason why the government are reducing the range of BTEC's offered by schools from 300+ to around 30 from September 2014.
This is not a slur on Wakefield at all, it does however appear that they will do everything and anything to make a few quid!!'"
Bang on, watered down pee poor education at any level is just that poor. It doesn't really serve the candidates as they will be against others whom are better equipped to succeed within the field and more knowledgeable/have better understanding of the core subjects.
I did B/Tec and a City & Guilds 2 year courses concurrently at Hull FE college (MANY moons ago) and had around 10 specialised lecturers for particular modules of the courses, most of which had worked in the industry both private & public sector. Probably the best grounding courses I could ever had and I still take a sneaky peak at my notes every so often 25 years on
I fear for kids today going into further education as it is such a minefield for them and not know how vastly different a course that sounds very similar/looks on face of it to be same or even the differential due to where a course is taken.
