There are hundreds of "definitions" of marketing out there, but that's the basic skeleton of all of them....
There's also another belief that is generally accepted around the world......once you offer something at "value" rates, it becomes nearly impossible to charge a premium for it ever again.
The RFL booked Wembley for a double header in 2011 and undoubtedly, got more fans in attendance for the 2 games than they would have if they had been played seperately.......but if you bought a ticket for a tenner, how keen are you going to be to fork out 30 notes for a pool play RLWC game between England and Australia next year?
Consumers have a choice....most RL fans that are AVID RL fans, have SKY TV.......to get these people off their "rses is a more complicated matter than offering tickets for a fiver. It's not like these RL Fans are new to the product..marketing an Exiles game against the national side in a Rugby League heartland is not the same as trying to promote the game of RL outside it's traditional heartland.
FWIW, If they are going to keep this concept for 2013, it should be 15 quid extra on top of a ST for 1 game, 25 notes for both.......pay the "selling club" 20% commission........then put the remaining tickets on general release at 20 for one and 30 for 2......advertise these tickets to the ANZACS and package them up with train compaies and travel lodges......start promoting them in February.........all ST holders that take up the offer can be contacted with specific offers relating to the games they are going to......cheap accom for those from say Hull attending a game in St Helens.....petrol offers, food offers, booze offers, coach offers, replica kit offers.....all designed to enhance the experience of attending an "event"
......in case you missed it, the last bit above is MARKETING.......last minute tickets for a fiver isn't!
It's not about just putting up goal posts and providing a ball and a whistle......which with the exception of a couple of Clubs, the entire game of RL in the UK believes it is
Well said and I completely agree with everything you have said
I have said for a long time that cheap deals and tickets for our showpiece events do not work and only cheapen the event, and the sport as a whole. I also dont think that that they lead to substantially greater crowds, certainly not in the long run and lead to a loss of revenue. Most people that I know if they are mildly interested in an event would easily spend up to £20 to go without even thinking about it, having it at a fiver isnt going to make a blind bit of difference to whether they will go or not. Having deals at the Challenge Cup Final and Grand Final is also similarly pointless and only serves to cheapen the events and will not make any difference to whether a RL fan will go or not. I also dont think that some of these deals help to encourage sponsors to get on board, do blue chip sponsors really want to get on board with sports version of Lidl?
