You make it sound like Leeds were
deliberately poor for the early part of the season. I don't think there's any question of 'short-changing' here. Leeds didn't perform well for a number of very valid reasons, including a new coaching team, a badly disrupted off-season, loss of key players to injury and a pretty unsettled squad (with many players playing out of position) as a result. Their return to form coincided with the return to form of the previously missing Peacock(in particular) and McGuire, together I think with a growing understanding of individual roles within the team.
Had Leeds had the luxury of a settled team, without as much as a third of their salary cap sat on the bench for much of the season, I'm pretty sure they would have challenged much better in the league ladder.
