| I would say the drop out is the best option. If you have a 10m restart for the penalised team they are immediately on the back foot trying to bring the ball out of their quarter of the pitch. One dropped ball / mistake etc and they are immediately defending their line.
By having a 20m drop out if they have a decent kicker they can clear their lines and put the opposition under pressure in their half.

I've never seen this, though. It would obviously be useful, but where could you get a ready supply of bodies from? ![DOH icon_biggrin.gifOH:](images/smilies//eusa_doh.gif)

| Quote: irish tiger "To take this to another extent, i was watching the Fev/Leigh game last night, after a good defensive set in the 2nd half Leigh had restricted fev to around 20 meters from their own try line, on the 5th tackle they kicked and it was charged down and went back over the in-goal line, surely as a reward for a good defensive set and pressuring the kicker then the attacking team should have had to drop out instead of a tap 20 and thus leigh have to defend another set?'"
On another day it might not have run dead when Higson charged the ball down though and we might have had a chance at, if not scoring, then at least gaining possession. You take the chance when trying to charge a kick down as far as I'm concerned.

Fair enough in the field of play, then if the attacking team fall on a charge down then they retain possesion, however if its charged down and go's dead then the defending team should be rewarded and the attacking team should not be awarded another shot at moving the ball from their own goal line.

But it is 100% the charger's fault that the ball has gone dead. If they didn't charge the ball then it would be down the other end. Why should you be rewarded for that?
