Its an interesting idea - if a player knocks on in the first tackle when running a penalty or if the ball stays in field when going for touch they do not get a "second chance" so why should they with a missed goal kick? I would probably opt for a 10 meter restart though.

I've never seen this, though. It would obviously be useful, but where could you get a ready supply of bodies from?

On another day it might not have run dead when Higson charged the ball down though and we might have had a chance at, if not scoring, then at least gaining possession. You take the chance when trying to charge a kick down as far as I'm concerned.

Fair enough in the field of play, then if the attacking team fall on a charge down then they retain possesion, however if its charged down and go's dead then the defending team should be rewarded and the attacking team should not be awarded another shot at moving the ball from their own goal line.

But it is 100% the charger's fault that the ball has gone dead. If they didn't charge the ball then it would be down the other end. Why should you be rewarded for that?
