The cheap 3 month advance returns don't seem to always appear for weekend travel. We struggled to get anything reasonable to go to Manchester for the Grand Final. Its cheaper and easier for us to buy group save tickets, which we can buy on the morning of travel - 4 travel for the price of 2. You can travel on any offpeak train then too, rather than being restricted. South Eastern and Southern do this, don't know about Northern operators.
