Assuming this is right, www.mediaspy.org/report/2011/04/ ... fl-rights/
we can assume that Ch9. Ch10 and Foxtel will all be bidding big for NRL rights. And that's not forgetting Ch7 who may well bid for some of the rugby league rights.
Logically, this means that the NRL will have a substantial increase in the tv deal, and therefore in the salary cap.
Good news in that it may mean a reduction in overseas players in SL, but we could also be losing far more of our best players as well.
As for SL tv negotiations, I'm reasonably upbeat. As a "product" (horrible phrase) the SL is terrific. I don't think ESPN will push the boat out to beat Sky but they may poke their toe in the water to keep Sky honest in the negotiations. We're never going to get the kind of deal that Union can achieve because of demographics, but I still anticipate an increase overall.

The product with the biggest problem is the CC because it garners quite low audiences and the BBC is stoney broke. We'll prob hear the usual RLFans guff about ITV, Ch4 and Ch5 being desperate to bid, but the reality is that the BBC only covers the CC because it's a public service. No commercial FTA broadcaster in the UK is going to touch it because it doesn't rate highly enough to be worth the effort. Possibly we need to start thinking outside the box about the CC. Does it need to change its format? But to what?

I'd also love to know what the broadcasters really say in the negotiations. Do they insist on a London side? Do they want a second French side? Do they care about a Welsh side? My instinct is yes to all three, but it's never spelled out. in truth, I suspect they don't care hugely either way because sadly the Greatest Game will always be a profitable little filler for the broadcasters compared to football.

Quote: Dunbar "I’m all for talking up our sport but I don’t know where you get this from

Looking at Sky Sports 1, 2, 3 & 4 figures for the 21st to 27th of March, the following are the top viewed programmes with 000’s of viewers listed

From what I can see, we rank behind football, cricket world cup, darts, WWE wrestling and (very worrying) Super Rugby Union (that may have been the match played at Wembley though)

WALES V ENGLAND-LIVE (SAT 1400) 1434
LIVE ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP-SLVENG (SAT 0830) 569
LIVE ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP-AUSVIND (THU 0830) 326
HUDDERSFIELD V NOTTS COUNTY-LIVE (SUN 1555) 273
REP OF IRELAND V MACEDONIA-LIVE (SAT 1915) 258
LIVE PREMIER LEAGUE DARTS (THU 1900) 248
M K DONS V PETERBOROUGH-LIVE (MON 1930) 244
LIVE ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP-NZVSA (FRI 0800) 214
BULGARIA V SWITZERLAND-LIVE (SAT 1749) 209
SERBIA V NORTHERN IRELAND-LIVE (FRI 1900) 194
GOALS ON SUNDAY (SUN 1100) 186
LIVE SUPER RUGBY UNION (SUN 1555) 149
WWE LATE NIGHT RAW - LIVE (MON 2500) 146
WWE LATE NIGHT SMACKDOWN (FRI 2200) 133
LIVE SUPER LEAGUE (FRI 1930) 125
LIVE SUPER LEAGUE (SAT 1730) 120'"

Come on, there is plenty of weeks where Super league is 2nd over past few years. Not really gonna complain about rivalling cricket world cup, hardly on every year.

And i had 28th march 2010 and week before that. haha

Fair enough - I do think that Super League is a quality product for Sky

What worries me a little is that the audience above is 282,000 whereas the highest figure SL has had this year is 214,000, I hope this isn't a trend (very difficult to analyse as you have to look at the figures week by week)
