Free Kids schemes for any games, any leagues any competitions should always involve being accompanied by a paying adult. In the past I've seen large numbers of unaccompanied youngsters using the grounds/games as a play-ground causing problems for other spectators and stewards in particular.
It might seem a bit selfish but having paid over £100 for a season ticket for a 6 year old I would not be too happy if free tickets started to be handed out for league games as I have in effect already paid for said games. It would need to include a pro rata reduction in the junior season ticket price so that STH kids still got in for free to that match.
I think it would be better if it was done for the challenge cup 4th round to get more people in to those games who are not season ticket holders.
The wide scale flooding of free tickets into schools to entice simply wont work. People attach little value to a freebie brought home from school - even more so if it is something they are not remotely interested in. Clubs need to get something back from a promo, even if it just contact details of a lead adult to pester them in the future!
That said a structured approach for a free junior with accompanying adult or free juniors on a family season ticket is something worth developing.
Just as an example : Bulls attendance was 15k-ish at the weekend . Wouldn't be quite as impressive if it came out that there were 7500 (or less) paying adults and 7500 (or more) kids on freebies would it ?
Attendance figures are just a rough guide to how a club is doing financially . I have been to a fair few games where you pay cash and walk through a gate . Would be much more accurate if they judged attendance by counting 'paid for' tickets and turnstile clicks .
