That would make it nearly the size of Manchester! Wigans smaller than Warrington and the only way you could say its anywhere near that figure is if you started including borough places like Skelmersdale which are about as 'Wigan' as Warrington is Chester. If we're talking boroughs and outskirts then Leeds is still about 6 times bigger anyway. Now lets not get daft.

The size of the centres is irrelevant. Support is the issue.

Skelmersdale isn't in Wigan borough. Wigan MBC is made up of Wigan itself, Leigh, Atherton, Tyldesley, Hindley, parts of Ashton-in-Makerfield and then rural Standish etc. Bar Leigh, Atherton & Tyldesley, they are all Wigan strongholds (and, sadly, even then there are plenty of crust munchers on our side of the borough), so I reckon it's pretty relevant.

Not really. Those three towns alone add up to over a hundred thousand people I bet so theres a third of your population gone already. Wigan isnt a big enough town to draw thousands upon thousands of neutral bypassers in like Leeds, which if we're talking boroughs is MASSIVE. Thats where I was drawing the comparison between Leeds getting 37,000 for their first sucess in donkeys and Wigan somehow expected to get 50,000 in the same scenario. Call upon the neutral support all you like but its like 1 in every 4 people in a town having to attend.. never going to happen
