| the nrl should try and get money from all the gambling done on nrl games.
they should get a % of the takings just like the horse racing industry does... this would solve all the nrl problems and lift the salary cap considerably.
for the time being the nrl should allow clubs to pay above the cap to their own juniors if they have the money. this would mean the broncos, storm, penrith, saints and canterbury who produce many juniors would benefit.
other teams like raiders and warriors are skint so cant afford extra payments.
it would allow storm to keep slater, inglis, cronk and smith and reward them for producing these great players instead of penalising them for being too good.

| Excellent (as always) blog post by Tony Collins [urlhttp://rugbyreloaded.blogspot.com/[/url on the NRL's lack of leadship seems to sum up the tone of this thread rather well.

| NRL's problems are not just down to TV money. AFL gets just under $50mill a year more in TV deal money than the NRL. They also have over $100million on top of that beyond NRL's revenue. Even on the same TV deal the NRL would still be $100mill less revenue a year than AFL. Our failings are at the top and the scary thing about the supposed IC is it is fundamentally the same people in the positions of power as now.
And this isn;t just at Code level, at club level it is the same with the majority of AFL clubs having revenues way in excess of what NRL clubs are bringing in.
Our problems go far far deeper than a poor TV deal but everyone seems to see that as the panacea that will allow us to catch up to AFL.

the afl couldn't afford union players...sonny bill williams was just offered $2million a year to stay in france, why would he want to take a pay cut and play afl?

league gives the impression of still being in the chook raffle days run by booze hounds from the local rsl club.
the afl will always have more money cos it gets at least 3 times as many fans thru the gate and much more sponsorship... it has a much better reputation in society than league and its players are welcomed in polite society unlike league players who are thought of as bogans and knuckle heads.
this big pay day at the next tv contract is no certainty.

How will a small grilled or toasted ciabatta roll that typically contains cheese help us catch the AFL up?

the nrl should be renamed the nfl... national feeder league.
if league keeps going like it is it will inevitably be destroyed by market forces as all the talented young sportsmen at school decide to play other sports and league is what the left overs play... those that dont have the skills or athletic ability to play soccer, union, afl, basketball, tennis or golf.
without the superstars a sport is very mediocre and wont attract the fans, sponsors and tv ratings.
