AFL players must be pretty annoyed, especially the young ones looking a shot at the big time.
After Hunt went we thought it was PR and probably wouldn't happen again. It's obvious now that they will continue to raid the NRL and the NRL can do nothing about it. Young RL players with a chance to make money in AFL now have $$ in their eyes.
There is not an unlimited supply of super stars, and if they start leaving for AFL they are completley wasted on kicking a ball for 3000 minutes or however long an AFL match is.

I understand that the AFL has started to offer contracts to Irish based Amateur Gealic Football players and that I can understand.....as the ball may be a different shape, but the catching and kicking (that's all AFL is isn't it?) skills are pretty much the same. My point is, why would the AFL waste millions on a name.....a name that can't kick or dribble/bounce, when there are probably a thousand young Australians who are better than izzy and another 1,000 paddy's as well?
It seems to me, from a business point of view, that this is a massive gamble and if (when) he fails, the AFL fans will be all over him from game 2.
As for calling him a judas...I suspect that everyone on here would do a lot worse than swap codes for the kind of money on offer. I think he will be back in the NRL or (ARU) Within 2 years.

They haven't signed them for their AFL playing skills! They've signed them for their publicity and to show 12 year old islander RL playing kids in the West of Sydney that they could switch games and be a superstar in another code. They have probably already had $4mill worth of NSW airtime and media coverage for the GWS team in the last week alone!

What's really weird is that there seems to be very little concept of loyalty at all within the NRL playing ranks. Very few talk about anything but money it seems.

And there you have it!
The Game will survive and I honestly believe that the NRL saying little or nothing is better than gnashing teeth in public......let the players who want to go, go.......most will be back. The game is different from union and the AFL and as history points to....cross code movement works vary rarely.....as I said, the game will survive. |
