| Quote dally messenger="dally messenger"im betting when you watch a game you just think pass the ball, run hard and thats all there is!
some people like to dig a little deeper.
heres another tip :
when teams are on the attack, one of the playmakers will stand behind the play at times and count the number of defenders on each side of the ruck. if they spot a side where they have an advantage theyll call for the ball to go to that side'"
no rubbish sherlock.... its called playing with your head up and what is in front of you, using flair not being a robot... very basics of the game taught to 12 year olds. Nothing tactical about this.
This subject is really making you look silly.
Just all basic stuff maybe named different etc its like me reeling of things like this - off, run around, hot ball... all very basic

| Quote dally messenger="dally messenger"one other tip, when watching a game, dont just focus on the ball carrier, focus on 5 m. either side of the PTB. watch the decoy runners and which lines they run, do they open up holes, which option does the play maker take
by just watching the ball carrier you wont understand why a try or line break eventuated.'"
Theres me just thinking the non ball carriers run around for the fun of it ...lol

Yeah thanks for that, can you explain why you think that in a goodball set teams should waste three tackles 'settling' the ball into a 'central' position rather than working to 20's or 80's and then putting on a more complex play?

| heres another tip for you lot :
teams in the nrl on last tackle have been deliberatly kicking the ball dead in goal, even on the full to nullify attacking fullbacks like hayne and slater returning the ball in broken play

Christ ... whoever thought of that kick the ball dead or into touch to stop the FB running back at you.... they should get a medal for whoever thought of that..lol.
While it is correct that you stop the back 3 running back at you it is very negative and just coughing up posssesion. Maybe if your winning by 2 or 3 scores do it , but i cant think of any other reason to just cough up possesion. better of taking the DG and getting possesion back rather than just give the ball away.

Also with a good kick chase the line shouldnt be broken, and the FB should have no room to attack from deep.

| Quote dally messenger="dally messenger"look if you know all this stuff it wouldve been better to add some of your own insights.
its easy to say you know this stuff but in terms of what youve added, its a bg fat donught'"
I will add some thoughts Dally - I'm not here just to criticise but I emphasise again that your posts are about how to play RL not tactics
Having said that, you have raised the point of deliberately kicking the ball out over the dead in goal line in order to nullify the attacking full backs and set a line of the 20m to defend
This, in my opinion, is a blight on the spectacle of our game and will lead to a rule change soon I believe
Just as the bomb stifled play in the 80's and the rule about diffusing the bomb stopped teams being trapped for set after set in their in goal, I think we will soon see a scrum back to the point of the kick if the ball is kicked dead from outside the 20m area
I would welcome this as it would encourage more accurate kicking - and, as you say, allow attacking full backs like Haynes and Slater be more dangerous (not good for England though!!)

i think its a smart tactic myself.
some people have talked about rule changes to stop it.
why play to the opposition strength
jamie soward did it a few times against hayne, and we used it again against another side

Indeed, this is what is meant by tactics... changing your play based on the strength of the opposition
If you see a strong kick return game in the opposition then the long kick dead so you can set your defence on the 20m is the right way forward
If you see a weakness in the kick return, better to chase well, keep the opposition penned into their own 5/10m and tire their forwards out
As a tactic, it is smart - as a spectacle for the fans, not so much
As I say, I would favour a rule change to a scrum back from the point of the kick (but not till after the 4 Nations!)
