i was just trying to come up with something. if not financial penalty then there could be other possibilities, such as making the bottom team run out to 'dont stop, never give up, hold your head high and reach the top...' (s club 7) the following season

How about adjusting the kick off line relative to where the clubs stand compared to each other? Roughly equally matched sides would kick off from the middle, top against bottom would kick off from the top sides 20m line, adjust according to relative positions - 7th v 3rd somewhere around the 35m mark maybe?

 exactly. Finishing bottom should be embarassing to the club. Force them to wear a pink kit with sequins, and scrum caps with plumes of pink feathers sticking out. Selotape a wooden spoon to their back and force them to wear make up applied by a 5 year old. That'll teach em for finishing bottom. |

Shall we make some attempt at making this a sensible discussion? Finishing bottom doesn't matter anymore and I enjoyed watching the relegation scrap as much as the clamber at the summit. Although when my team was in it, it wasn't so much a scrap as a D.N.R. after half the season.
I agree a financial penalty would be bang out of order but as it stands now, just having let down players and fans, so what? They still get top flight rugby next year. Make them replace their club crest for that of a turd or something like that.

The bottom team gets less fans the next year because people don't want to watch unsuccessful teams!
They could get laughed at by opposition fans for being rubbish!
They could have a vast amount of people wanting them to have never existed and complain about the management of rugby league, all because of them!
