| I like the one minutes applause, especially for something like a club legend who has passed, its like they are getting one last standing ovation.

| There's been applauses and silences at the KC, just depends on what the familys want.

| It all depends on if you want to mourn the passing of someone, or celebrate their life.
I tend to favour the latter and indeed want a game of rugby played on the graveyard at my funeral. If the families of loved ones buried there don't like it........well they should have thought about that before burying their loved ones on my rugby pitch

| Quote bramleyrhino="bramleyrhino"Different circumstances merit different tributes for me.
To use the Bobby Robson example, I think applause is a fitting tribute to somebody who offered so much to the game he was involved in and to those around him. It was a life worth celebrating.
On the other hand, I would have imagined that a minutes silence was held at Valley Parade earlier this week when Bradford played Lincoln City - the opposition that they faced on the day of the Valley Parade fire. Of course, in those circumstances, there is nothing to applaud.'"
What he said.

| I think that the 1 min silence has more impact - to see a whole crowd of people completely silent, reflecting on the individual/event, I would say is much more a mark of respect than the same crowd clapping - which they all do at games anyway.

Agreed. Also love to roar after the referee's whistle which someone reffered to earlier.

RL fans have class and decorum and so can keep quiet for a whole 60s as a mark of respect.'"
By giving applause you are saluting all that person has done...we applaude a good try, goal, tackle etc....so why not their lifetime in the sport etc.
Can see both sides, applause or silence...the person is still getting the respect. Most people would rather people celebrated their life and accomplishments rather than wollow in them.

| The main issue is context.
If a tragic loss, e.g. young star life lost 'prematurely' then silence i feel more suitably captures the emotion
However if more a celebration of a long and fruitful life, with death less of a shock (e.g. Sir Bobby) Id go for applause every time
