Quote Charlie Sheen="Charlie Sheen"Widdop and Chase both have decent kicking games. For me the biggest problem England have had over the last 4 years is a lack of go forward. Despite being fed this myth that we have a better pack than the Aussies we have rairly been able to get the better of them in the forwards this lack of field position has resulted in us having to kick the ball from our own 30m and no matter how good of a kicking game a player has its almost impossible to put in decent kick when your kicking the ball to a full back as good as Slater.'"
I completely agree that the field position has been a major problem for our national team against a disciplined Australian and New Zealand team
For me it is a combination of three things
1. Kick return being slow and ineffective and then the first outside back runs from out of their own 20
2. Go forward and momentum with the forwards
3. Decent long kicking game to pin the opposition back
I think that the first will be better this year than previous years with Tomkins, Briscoe and Hall being far better at bringing back kick ball on tackles 1 and 2 that the likes of Wellens, Calderwood and Gardner in the past
The forwards are capable of gaining momentum but I agree we do have a tendency to overhype – the key for me is to have at least two good props on the bench, we have suffered in the past with starting the game well and then losing momentum when our big men leave the pitch
I do worry about the kicking game – Brough is the best option we could have chosen, I just hope Chase, Tomkins and Widdop can step up here
