| (Sir) Keith eats soft centres
. . . . . . . . and anything else that ran his way
He was a God then. He'd have been awesome (and rich) in the SL IMHO

The modern FB is a very different beast. I'm not sure where he would have ended up playing positionally now.

| The whole game is a different game to the one played when Sir Keith was pulling an RA&B jumper on and he may possibly have played in a different position. Taking the bombs and dealing with two runners as the last line of defence is still pretty much the role of the FB though, just as it was when it was, maybe, more of a 'sweeper' position, in Keith's day.

| I still think he would have made it at Full back in this era. He was no mean attacker either. He did play loose forward towards the backend of his career, and he played centre for GB because we did not have centre who could tackle like him. The best, honest and fairest sportsman I have ever seen.
PS where can I buy the T Shirt?

| Mumby was a fantastic defender without a doubt, but he would not have the pace to play at FB in the modern era imo as he was relatively one paced, still a great of his era though without a doubt
He would have been a backrower in this era or maybe even a 9

I don't think that is an accurate assessment. Sir Keith obviously didn't have the pace of a Slater, but was no slouch and certainly as fast as the likes of Wellens, Spruce or Withers.
If you want a lightning attacking F/B then fair comment, but I watched Mumby's whole career and there were some bloody fast wingers around back in the day, yet it is hard to remember anyone beating Sir Keith with sheer pace. The magic he had - which I have never seen in any other F/B since - was timing, coupled with peerless anticipation. He could read what was happening, weigh it up, work out the speeds and angles and BANG, the guy was down, and that was that.
He was the best defensive f/b there's ever been, and would 100% certainly have been a great in any era.
(Did I mention he could kick goals like a machine too?)

| I think he could have played right centre in the modern game.
His tackling was the best I've ever seen. What stood out for me was that he wasn't dependent on pace. It was not uncommon for an attacker to look like he had actually beaten Keith only for Keith to effect the tackle by getting a hand to the attackers ankle or foot AND bring him down. I've never seen a player complete tackles with such minimal contact.

I don't think Keith was especially quick. Neither for those days, or now. He was, as you rightly, say more of a Wellens for pace but remember Wello has been regularly slammed as slow. What Keith had, as you very rightly have already pointed out, was exquisite timing and anticipation - he rarely needed to catch wingers from the back 'cos they didn't bloody well get past in the first place....even if the centre tried to slip it at the last second, Keith seemed to know, just uncanny.

| I was lucky enough to be at Keith's first game. Eddie Tees had slung his hook and Keith - just 16 - was brought into the first team. I remember his first kick at goal. The crowd was silent - nervously wishing him to do well. We needn't have worried. He went on to score 27 points in the match and a legend was born. In the same match Arnie Long ran in 5 tries. Never seen that from a prop before or since but, sadly for Arnie, he was somewhat over shadowed.
The arguments about Keith's pace matter not. The game has changed but he was the best I ever saw. All you can be is as good as you can be when your time comes. Keith played the game with calmness and modesty and was a true sportsman. When you see some of the sportsmen who recieve MBEs and the like it makes it a criminal shame that they seldom go to the ones who deserve them most.

| I saw that match too, the most interesting thing about it, in a way, is can you imagine a sixteen-year old getting brought into the first team today?

| I saw the match as well, who would have believed he would have gone on and played nearly 600 matches of such a high consistency, I believe he was only substitute on a handful occasions and most of those in the latter years. For a 16 year old to become a permanent fixture was amazing. A true legend no wonder fans call him Sir Keith.
