I'll give the bloke a fair play award for doing it but when I'm having to put fingers up as to who has scored and explaining that the try hasn't been given yet and that's in the hands of Silverwood then maybe it's time to call it a day.
Agree about Dave Woods though, always the astute professionalist.

| Why didn't Ganson award a penalty for this?

| I believe it was because Tomkins actually scored so in effect it wasn't a penalty try (the offence didn't prevent a try being scored).
Say for example if a try had been scored and someone got hit off the ball they wouldn't get a penalty after the try but the offence would be punished by red/yellow card if it was picked up by the ref/linesman.
Does that make sense? Probably not!!

I don't know the rules exactly but the commentators were saying about being fouled in the act of scoring should be an "8 pointer" try.
what you say does make sense though.

Is this something you are in favour of then? Otherwise I'm not sure of your point.

A penalty try is only awarded if it prevents a try being scored. An 8 point try (I think) is only awarded if the offence takes place as the try is being scored, not before. I presume that was Ganson's interpretation.

| Given Raynor has a pretty clean disciplinary record, I can't believe that he had any intention of injuring Tomkins. He was attacking the football, but his timing and Tomkins dive towards the line resulted in an injury.
I think an on report and 10 minutes for Raynor for a careless tackle would have been a fairer call rather than a straight red.

Is what something I am in favour of?
The vast majority of games have no video ref at them so in those Raynor would have been on report as no-one saw it. When it was slowed down so you could see Raynor lining up Tomkins chin as he ran in from 50m away it looked worse.

So Raynor's offense did not take place as the try was being scored? Mmmm. I wonder how much closer you have to be to get the 8 point try awarded.

So anyone swinging a fist, missing the ball by 2 feet & knocking the opposition player out should just get a yellow?

No, but you've got to take it into context...When a player is diving in for a try and cannot be tackled the defender should aim for the ball carrying arm.
Unfortunately he missed.

So he should have stood there and done nothing?
And had he not knocked him out - then what? No charge?
Lynch should have gone down against Halifax then...
