| Seemed to lack ideas in the final 20. Was like a return to the days of John Kear with our kicking game. We need more variety of kick on the last.
Was also a bit mystified by the referee - the ptb was the slowest I've seen in ages and he seemed unwilling to penalise any holding down at all.

| Quote: Bulls Boy 2011 "I said this when he got the job. Need a proper coach. He’s done okay in patches (Toulouse, Widnes etc) but it’s overwhelmed by performances against a crap York, today and Keighley.
This is where I have an issue. If it was SL at all costs, why would we loan or DR in players who have been poor (Ruan, Roberts, Bibby, Butler etc). If you watched GFJ last season you’d know he’s far off first team Championship week in week out. For me his debut was only talked about because of a try. His defence wasn’t great and the following game was poor. Ran alongside someone who broke through and jumped on them as they were scoring. He’s young and he’ll improve no doubt. But to say he’s ready to go for a lack of chance is rubbish. He won’t get anywhere near Hudds side next year. He’ll be in the reserves. Or loaned to a League 1 side. Why would he play Myers today if it was SL at all costs?
I agree with most of what you said but please don’t miss understand me about Flanagan Jr. I do t think he’s ready either but that’s my point, under this coaching team and agenda the likes of him will never improve.
I do thinkit is SL at all costs tho that’s why I think he doesn’t have a long term contract as yet. I could be wrong but it seems that no one really has committed themselves to the club due to loanees DR and short term contracts only.

| Flanagan again, for me, was a weird one. He’s usually buzzing and full of energy and this is twice now (Keighley and Batley) that he’s looking like he’s not bothered or fired up. Especially being two derbies!
I wonder if he’s been told to reign it in by Dunning to avoid penalties and bans? His whole game is based on running around the ruck area to inject life into the attack and that’s been missing.

| Agree BB11.
It sounded like Fax were flat as well which probably shows how much Monday took out of both teams. Still disappointing though.
When we went set for set I thought we were on top. Until the referee "intervened" late in the set. Don't normally comment on refs but I thought he was an absolute disgrace today. Not helped by two young touch judges either. It felt like Batley were refereeing the game. Laying on for an eternity, constant diving at the ruck. They were taking the mick out of him. The fact Baldwinson was laid out in the ruck and he he didn't have a clue for god knows how long says everything.
On Dunning, the jury's still out. We've had some excellent wins, but keep letting ourselves down badly against more winnable games. I think the next 5 league games, all against sides towards the end of the table will be crucial for him. We should be winning all 5 end of. At that point everyone will have played each other once and we'll see where we are.

| You could see the Batley players appealing for a penalty on lots of occasions. It was clearly a tactic to put pressure on the young officials. Every time there was a slow PTB he was gesturing to the ball carrier to get up rather than penalising the holding down. I also noticed that both sides were taking taps and kick offs before the whistle a lot which to me is a sign of a weak ref. It's not an easy job but we didn't get a fair shake yesterday IMO. Despite that we had no answer to the Batley game plan and played completely into their hands.
On Dunning there's no doubt we're miles better than last season but we also have a lot of improving to do. The main issue for us has been the ill discipline, unforced errors and inconsistency. When we iron that out we can match it with anyone in the league. Unfortunately we can't seem to string two good performances together. I think we'll look much better if we can play a fit Jack Walker since that should mean Holmes moves to halfback and gets his hands on the ball more.

| What happened to make Patton lose the plot? I missed that.
I also missed who sparked the Batley player leading to the yet-another-20m-out penalty, I also missed why another 20m out penalty was given for a high shot when the tackler looked to be around the attackers ankles?
I make it a point to never bag the refs but for the first time since the sniper took out Joynt I left the ground wondering about the refs impartiality.
We lay on, set restarted, but at times when Batley were defendingd it looked like Union there were that many of them laying on, diving on and generally looking for a good cuddle.
Saying that though. When will the eejits learn you don't need to score off every bloody tackle? Fine work from Holmes to get the ball back 20 m from the Batley line and what do we do? Run the ball in and consolidate? No, too sensible, sling two long balls to the left and get put into touch...stupid school boy errors.
As someone mentioned above we were clearly the better side and were making 20-30m more per set (when we could be 4r5ed completing the set) but we kept coming up with new and innovative ways to hand the ball back to Batley when we could have ground them down?
Credit to Batley, they put the ref in their back pocket and knew exactly how to play him but even with the weakened side and shorter turn round we handed them the game, rather than them beating us.

It even states it in the article he doesn’t join the Giants until December, they’ve paid money for him, he’s training with them, although the registration doesn’t pass over until December , to all intents and purposes he’s at least partially a Giants asset! Is it no wonder the lines are a bit blurred with him?

Alleged head butt, I think. Which will hurt Batley in 2 weeks but didn't help us yesterday.

| Patton was clearly incensed by something and he ran in to pull Meadows off Holmes which then caused everyone to run in. Not that the officials saw anything in the incident. Looked like Holmes got roughed up on the ground to me. Would've been better call the game to a halt, speak to both captains, put the incident on report and carry on the a PTB if no official saw an offence. No punches thrown that I saw. If the ref gets his cards out then one from each side should've gone.

| On the plus side - Myers has come through the academy, played at right centre and I would say had a decent 7/10 performance on his debut. Didn't look out of place. Well done. Should be more opportunities in the future.
Gill was quiet. Don't know why. Scurr was immense, again. Holmes also. I'm really looking forward to seeing his talent in the halves.
Is there an argument for Billy Jowitt on the wing? He did it for a short time vs Halifax. I wasn't that impressed with Foggin-Johnson yesterday.

| Myers was definitely a plus. Good to know he can do a job if we lose Gill or Arundal. Gill didn't get particularly great service - like I said above in the first half when we moved the ball wide Patton seemed to pass the ball without engaging a defender which gave his outside runners no space. I think the main reason he didn't shine was that our play the ball was really slow so that meant by the time he got the ball the Batley defence was on him. That was partly down to the ref allowing a 6/7 second PTB and also our dummy half passing was awful at times with the ball going above the head of the first receiver.
DFJ looked well out of form. He looked dodgy under the kick and in attack he hardly ever beat the first man. He almost seems to seek out defenders to tackle him. Perhaps that's down to a lack of game time. I'd consider Jowitt on the wing given he's better under the high kick, his versatility makes him a good option in the 17 though so I'd expect to see him sharing the hooker spot or providing cover at halfback or fullback.

| What we were missing Sunday was an on field general, we are not a bad team, just a badly organised team. We looked better when Lawrence was fit and he led from the front but... past his best and injured.. Walker i am still not sure he will survive the season once back on the field.. injury prone and if he does survive will use us to springboard his career elsewhere.. We need a Penguin and fast.

| Grade D and two game ban for Meadows. Charged with a full head butt on the floor. Doesn't help us though.
Don't think the ref could have got it more wrong. Instead of a red card to Batley he gave them the penalty plus sin-binned our player even though no punches throw.
C'est La vie.

One of the worst cases of reffing I’ve seen since Ganson gave the Tansey try against us in the Millennium Magic?
