McGuire at Wigan has not previously been a senior club head coach, has not won anything, is at a club with plenty of money and is the second coming! (Or so Wigan fans would have you believe). Whereas Noble and slack-jaw before him won everything there is to win in the SL, just not at Wigan. Which just goes to show that, in reality, previous record is probably not such a good indicator of future record.

| Really cant see how we would progress under the leadership of either McDermott, Lowes or Jon Sharp. Maybe Potter or Millward could make a slight change.

| If we get either of these two then we will see a massive improvement in on field results.

| It's certainly a great smoke screen this story throwing people off the scent of who the real man is.

| I would wager on Potter being appointed to continue the "all things antipodean being quite marvellous" misconception that exists in RL. Then the PR wagon wheel of "track record, 5 Grand Finals, players speak highly of him, history with the Bulls, great guy, unfinished business" yada yada will be trotted out.
Albeit I feel Mac would be a far more astute appointment given some of the excellent young players he has helped produce as well as turning the some average players into pretty handy ones.
Neither a bad appointment however given the apparently limited finance available.

| The best British and the best antipodean realistic candidates IMO.
If we could get them both I would be very happy.

I'd be ecstatic. But surely that is extremely unlikely?

| I think it is unlikely we will get both, although if it did happen I would be thrilled.
I'd ve very happy with Potter though. Saints play some of the best rugby in the competition, Potter has a good record at both Catalans and Saints, he's proved he can coach a team to finals and he's also not afraid to blood youngsters.
Whilst he may not have brought all these Saints youngsters into their academy, he certainly seems to know how and when to blood them and they seem to progress fast under him.
I wouldn't be unhappy with McDermott, but Potter would be a much better appointment imo.

Unfortunately, I fear you are probably right.
See Connor is asking folk on Twitter which one they want?
I vote coalition!

Haven't Saints always played some of the best rugby in the comp? Not sure Potter can be credited with over and above the abilities of the players.
In saying that, Brian Potter would be a better choice than John Kear. Cannot abide the bloke as a coach, commentator or as a finger mouse puppet.

Thats fair comment, but as a coach, Potter has proved more than McDermott atm.

Until something is formally announced, I'll treat everything still as speculation. However, I'd be quite happy should this prove to be the case.
EDIT
Neither we need to look to the NRL imo.

| Murphy suggests via Twitter that we'll know within a week. He also says it is very close.
I'm firmly in the Mick Potter camp atm.

| It's neither. I was drinking with duffers and hoody in the Craven heifer last night.
I won't say outright who it is but I'll give you a clue. His first name starts with an L and his second name starts with a St.

That has absolutely no bearing on whether he'll be a good head coach or not what so ever. That's the job of the development coach or what ever they call them these days. Every club in the SUper league know with the exception of that soul less franchise in Wrexham has it's own academy churning out quality players that are filling up their own squads. My friend used to work for harlequins and she says it's the culture within the organisation as a whole from board level down. Brian McDermott has undoubtedly put his heart and a lot of work into it but so has Steve Macnamara at Bradford. I think the club need to appoint the man that will get the best out of the first team squad as a priority over everything else as if the current slump (and I'm talking about the last five years and I'm not holding Macnamara responsible for that) continues there'll be only us lot on here rattling around the Odsal Bowl by the end of next season. In that respect we need the coach to have been at winning clubs from a marketing point of view or season ticket sales could tumble.
That's the priority and the man to do it will be revealed this week.
