Would they?
I say thats bollox.
I say a large proportion of people, having entered into a contractual commitment for a period of time, would consider themselves both honour-bound to see the contract through, and not wishing to admit failure by running away.
And, funnily enough, that is precisely what I did, in a not dissimilar situation when I went to take up a two-year contract in the antipodes. I hated it at first - like Orford, I went from one winter to another. But I did not run away. I did not renege on a contract I had freely entered into. I gritted my teeth, stuck to it, made myself find ways of turning it round, and after a few months there came to very much enjoy it and realise I had made the right decision.
So if I could do that, on a contract worth a fraction of Orford's why the hell could not he?
Pious? Not at all. Been there; done that. Qualified by experience to offer comment. You?
