| Apologies if someone has said this (I cba reading the whole thread), but if Fielden is worth £450k, then Burgess is most certainly worth more than £200k. He's much younger and not past his prime.

He's worth what the current market will pay. Simple as
What Wigan (over)paid for Fielden in irrelevant in this whole discussion.
It's like saying, 'oh my house cost £200,000 in 2003'. I bet it isn't worth that much now! The current market price is driven by external factors, and it's basically the same with rugby players

| This is the relevant bit - worth quoting in full on here I think
Those of you who put a £1/2m price tag on him, and said we should not sell for less - looks like the Chairman agrees with you.
Sounds like the club is not concerned about Sam taking his bat home, with is extremely encouraging and supports the view that Sam (and you hope his agent) will act honourably?
No reference there to any early-release-end-2010-if-NRL clause in his contract...hmm?
Bit of a shame we have to read this in the Oz media though, with a deafening silence from the club here leaving the fans to speculate wildly?

Quite. It's not exactly taxing to put out a press release to this effect is it?

| The key here for me is whether he does have that get out clause. If there is no clause and he is contracted to 2011 then I would agree that 200k is not enough compensation unless he desperately wants out. But if he does have the clause and it stipulates he can simply tear up the contract in 2010 and we receive nothing then we should consider offers now.

If I remember correctly, the first talk of an opt out clause at the end of 2010 was on here, which was speculation. It's likely as not that this is where the rumour of an opt out clause has come from and it's been repeated by lazy journos.
We should be taking Hood's position with a pinch of salt obviously, as this will be part of any negotiations. He's hardly going to say, 'well we'd be happy to get £200k' and then set himself up to get knocked down even further. I would imagine £500k is his opening position, and given that Crowe's involved and in the UK, it seems a reasonable starting point.

Not sure if the specific 2010 supposed-break point arose on here - first time I saw this specific was in the press. The wording gave me the impression that it came from the discussion with Caisley, although that was never stated or directly implied. If there IS no such clause (and we do not know definitively either one way or the other) then it could possibly suit some to see the impression given that there IS such a clause? Or, then again, its just the media feeding frenzy.
And anyway, I am sure that someone who (unless anything has changed since January, which is possible) remains a 26% shareholder and is also representing players, will be especially careful to avoid potential conflicts of interest, particularly in dealings with the media?
As for your second paragraph -yes, for sure.

| Given the thinly veiled attacks made on his stewardship of the club by the current board and coaching staff you'd suspect that his relationship with the club wasn't the best.
It's certainly a complicated situation.

I suggest you revisit the wording of your second paragraph, because you may be heading towards libel on Caisley IMO. Maybe just make it more clear its opinion?
But, back to your first point, and yes I am concerned. But because he holds a quarter of the shares. Other than that, he is a free agent (d'oh!) and can do what he wants provided he does not breach terms of his previous employment with the club or in any settlement agreement he entered into on resigning. If this means looking after his or his principals' interests, there is not a lot we can do about it, I guess.
But no, it worries me and I agree entirely with Bullseye there.

Complicated for us as a club, but I suspect its not very complicated for Mr Caisley. He'll just get the best deal he can for Sam, whenever/wherever that is, Bradford's needs will come after.

English forward Sam Burgess, has had a $1 million price tag put on his head by Super League club Bradford.
Burgess, in the sights of a host of NRL clubs including Manly, Wests Tigers, South Sydney and Parramatta, has two more years remaining on his existing contract with the Bulls.
However, there has been speculation he could be ready to switch to the NRL as early as next year, with Rabbitohs co-owner Russell Crowe taking it upon himself to woo a player once voted the best teenage rugby league talent in the world.
Bradford chairman Peter Hood has, however, moved to douse NRL interest by warning it would take a significant financial inducement for the club to release him before the end of 2011.
Asked whether he would allow Burgess to leave for $500,000, Hood replied: "We would definitely not consider (releasing him) for that."
However, Hood acknowledged Bradford would consider selling Burgess for $1 million.
"One would have to take those sort of numbers seriously," Hood said.
"It's that old adage -- everything is for sale at a price."

| I'm a Rabbitohs fan.
I can't see any NRL club paying 1 million AUS dollars or more just to release him from his contract.
We would be better off waiting 1 season and not pay a cent in transfer.

Well the point of a lot of the discussion is whether or not it IS one season or in fact two seasons. Unfortunately the board don't seem particularly interested or inclined to clear that up.
Although the quote from our Chairman in the Auz news would suggest it IS two years:
'Bradford chairman Peter Hood has, however, moved to douse NRL interest by warning it would take a significant financial inducement for the club to release him before the end of 2011.'
