I am sure that Sam will honour his contract and play to the very best of his ability is he stays for two more years. It will just increase his value when he goes. If he spends a year sulking then what will his new club think about his attitude? It won't do him any favours will it?'"
One year, remember. And the NRL will wait - its not as if he's getting on in years. And I did not suggest Sam would "sulk" - just maybe "pick his games". That way, he loses none of his attraction on the world stage, but would not necessarily have to play a blinder at e.g. Salford away.
Mate, I wish we COULD get £1/2m for him. But we won't, and I think need to face the realities of the situation.

| I'm gutted that Sam will be leaving the club soon, he is by far our biggest star. But is he really worth his current wages plus 200k for another years service? Of course the 200k offer from Crowe might not be true but I still feel we should consider offers of player exchange IF they're of the right quality and position. Obviously if we do not receive a satisfactory deal then we have the pleasure of seeing Sam for at least another season.
To suggest we should be holding out for 500k+ for him from the NRL is bordering on insanity.. it just won't happen.
Personally I'd rather wish the young lad all the best and make it clear we'd love to have him back here when he feels ready to return to SL. It would soften the blow to receive SOME sort of compensation than nothing at all in 12 months time.

| Quote: Adeybull "Neither would I, as it happens. But has anyone suggested that was Sam's intention when signing? And would you sign a contract believing that you would see it through if nothing better came up, but if an opportunity to pursue a career option you really wanted presented itself you would see if you could agree an exit from it? I would, and I'm too bloody honourable for my own good!
I would be a stand up guy and honour the contract that I have signed, end of story.

| Quote: Bully_Boxer "But surely the real issue is whether we should consider striking a deal if a good enough offer comes in before 2010. If an offer came in that would benefit the Bulls sufficiently, would you expect the club to turn it down so we could keep Burgess for another season and then lose him with no compensation?'"
Who cares about compenesation, keep him till his contract ends and we get 2 seasons worth of play from a top drawer player, that's worth a lot more than any measley amount of money.

On the other hand if we could get an NRL club to shell out 200k+ as a transfer fee then I'd be tempted as that money would allow us to pay transfer fee/fees to strengthen our backline with british players which is where we are weak. taking burgess out of our pack wouldnt significantly weaken it (given we'll be adding hall and menzies will be playing their next year and not stuck in the centres)but 200k available for transfers could make a big difference to our backline.'"
And two years down the line when these backs have done naff all and decide to leave anyway, we have got neither Burgess or any other quality backs as a reseult of it.
And losing a player of Sams quality would severly weaken the pack, anybody would be a fool to think otherwise.
If Burgess is sold then I will not be going once next season.

| Quote: Adeybull "And then what do you do? Force Sam to do a year here when he could have been in Sydney? He'll be really motivated then, won't he? And who would be surprised if he ended up "picking" his games, and being "injured" a lot? Sam strikes me as a thoroughly honourable, decent, and very well brought up lad. But at the end of the day he is only human!
And you are falling into the trap of using the Fielden transfer as a benchmark. It was no such thing. It reflected a near-unique set of circumstances, at a time when the economic bubble "boom" was on, and a desperate buying club. None of those circumstances apply here.
Like any other asset, he's worth what the market is prepared to pay. Why would a club pay megabucks now, when all they have to do is wait and get him for free?'"

But the information is that his contract has an opt out clause for 2010 for NRL clubs. I am 99% certain that the Bulls would be powerless to keep him if he chose to take up that clause which he almost certainly would do, it would seem. That the was the contract both parties agreed to.

| Could we not, somehow, encourage Sam to commit a minor offence, then he won't get a visa and will have to stay here. Or are the Australian immigration authorities a bit happier to let criminals in?

Doesn't get away from the fact that he may well be "honoring" his contractual obligations.
All the best to him as far as I'm concerned. Good Kid. Good player. Good luck to him - I sincerely hope that if he does go it's all gravey for him.
For a young bloke, like a lot of other people, he's had to cope with a lot. I certainly wouldn't begrudge him putting himself first for a change.

. Doesn't quite follow - if you live in Baildon but eventually move to Ilkley, it doesn't mean you never liked Baildon. But I'll happily concede that losing Burgess would weaken the pro-SM argument.

(If Fielden
As far as compensation goes, or transfer fee call it what you will, if its souths who seem to be the only ones thinking in compensation terms, and if Crowe is invloved then;
"[iAnd it is felt Crowe is such a big fan of hard-hitting Burgess that compensation won’t be a problem, although there could be one stumbling block – salary cap issues. "[/i
rlhttp://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/sport/sportbulls/4531388.Russell_Crowe_plots_blockbuster_deal_for_Burgess/rl
Reading between the rumour lines I get the impression that Crowe could stump up the money himself, and then all bets are off as to the market value, its how much a Hollywood A-lister is prepared to cough up for his home town club where he has a controlling interest. Which could be anything, Im pretty sure 200K is small change to Crowe, so we could be talking the Fielden type level of pay off if we play it right. And if we get that and Burgess gets to take the opportunity of a life time then so be it, it would be a big blow and I dont want him to leave but good luck to the lad, I wouldn't stand in his way and that sort of cash (500K+) could seriously allow us to strengthen where we need it more than at prop.

| Hood has said that bradford wont release burg for 200k and it will take 1m aus $ to get him otherwise he stays.
Lyon is dropping next yrs wage demands so that they can resign orford, williams robertson etc, so if he goes there wont be for players.

Source please?
That's close to the £0.5m that several folk on here have been clamouring for. If Hood HAS said that, then those folk who were holding out for that amount will be able to award themselves major bragging rights!
