39110_1363272058.jpg Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good
-
sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league
-
Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate
-
the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever
-
Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go
-
Saint94..Every team is in your feckin shadow, we all know

A fair analysis.
However, Tomkins defence is still awesome, just look at the high balls he took in the semi-final. Look at the tackle on Lomax one on one. He is class.
Remember though, this is Tomkins second full season.
SCARY.

The NRL turns players out with the level of tomkin talents every season! There is a kid playing for the warriors at 7 Shaun Johnson who is ripping it up after 4 first grade games! If Tomkin scored a try like Johnson did against the broncs the Sky sports team as well as the pie fans would have drown in their own cum.
tomkin as good as he is has a long way to go and there are 20 kids as good as tomkin in the NRL as well as tons of seasoned pros who are better and done more in a much tougher comp, at origin and international level.

I don't think to compare them is an insult to slater, if you didn't compare players you'd never know who was better. I would say that to claim he's better than slater would be slightly unfair to slater, as you say he's been the best fullback in the world for years. Its one thing to be worldclass over a season or two (sam is worldclass, I think it would be hard to argue otherwise), but another to be the standout player in your position in the world over a number of years. The lad is 22, nowhere near his prime and is progressing at a fantastic rate. He's the best player in the super league and is being spoken about as being one of the best fullbacks in the world, a position he has been playing for a year and a half. To compare him to players of the past is somewhat unfair, you're comparing a glittering career of the likes of Hanley or Edwards (or indeed the current career of Slater) to that of a lad who can count the number of seasons he's played on one hand. He may turn out to be the best player to grace a rugby field, or he may turn out to be what he already is, a very very good fullback. Like you say, it's not sam making the claims or comparisons, and why should pundits and commentators play down a brilliant talent? They are there to entertain the audience and the sport should be bigging up the likes of tomkins and Roby, would you rather they said "well it's debateable if they'd cope in Australia, much better league there don't you know"?
Sam Tomkins is a very good player who seems to be getting better by the week. He has the potential to be a great, he's English and he's doing a fantastic job for my team. At 22 I wouldn't change him and look forward to seeing his progression as I'm sure there's more to come. The rest is maybes and only time will tell.

Tomkin is awesome no doubt but read my post above. He would be awesome in the NRL but so are plenty of others! In SL he stands out down here he would be one of many super freak players.
It would be a crime if he doesnt play in Oz in his prime. To truly fulfill his potential he needs to play NRL

He was obviously embarrassed to be compared to Wigan greats in that post match interview.

Well it's only right to question if they would cope in a better league. No doubt both would but to what extent is up for question till either go there. Plus i'd rather not listen to the Sky commentators.
Always thought Danny Mcguire should have gone down. At 22 he got 39 tries in a season, but whilst being hyped, i don't remember the anywhere near the same hype as tomkins.

I'm massively on the fence with this one, simply because I don't want Wigan to lose such a talented player. I'm sure he would do well in the NRL, just how well I don't know. The only way we'll know is if he goes. Part of me does wonder if he gets hyped up so much because he's at Wigan, therefore naturally he gets compared to a young Edwards etc?

| I think any good youngster at Wigan gets more hype than most because it's Wigan, pretty much the biggest club in SL. Obviously it's an insult to say Tomkins is just a good youngster but you get my point. He would be a stand out at any club in SL, though it's always easier to look better in the best club in the comp. I'd be interested to see how he'd get on if Wigan struggled ( anything like that seems way off mind ).
Never really liked Edwards and his time at the Bulls never helped that opinion.
Anyway, i can't be bothered talking about him as every other person does anyway and i'm not that interested. Just do it for England/ Great Britain and i'll happily say he is a legend.

Nope, its nowt to do be with him being at Wigan and certainly nowt to do with Edwards, young or otherwise.
This guy makes Edwards look pedesrian
Whether Wigan loose him is up to them. The list of world class players who have refused to up-sticks to Aussie is long.

| Sam is already one of the best Wigan have had. You cant even compare him to any past players. If you put sam in the team many years ago, He'd score trys even easier. It's sad that O'loughlin doesnt get more praise. Even with the likes of sam to choose from, Sean would be the first player in any team for me.

This the Sam Tomkins appreciation thread and not one for wigan fans to buff up half decent players.
<stands back and awaits the usual diatribe from Wigan fans who think Sean is a world beater>
They can bugger of and self masturbate over him on their own site

| Much as it pains me to say it, Tomkins is far better as an attacking player than Edwards ever was. In fact I'm struggling to remember a GB player of the last 30 years with his abilities (Shaun Irwin excepted). The way he cut through some of the defence was freakish. He's a tough little bugger as well. There, I'm out of the closet.
