What about Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Humberside?
Heh heh. Clever.
Sadly for you though I had my disclaimer already by saying that it was only played to any standard in the four counties I highlighted.

| Quote: mystic eddie "I am not arguing that the game is not very dull. It is. RL is the superior game to watch, but RU is BY FAR the bigger game worldwide.
Let's just have a wee look.
Internationally we have the 6 nations, the southern hemisphere four nations, the Autumn test series, and a World Cup with a number of sides with a hope, rather than not having a prayer.
There are strong sides in Aus, NZ, South Africa, England, Ireland, Argentina, France and Wales. There are secondary countries like Scotland, Italy, Samoa, Tonga, Romania, and Fiji.
Club wise there are strong leagues in France, England, Japan, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. There is the Heineken Cup, Amlin Challenge Cup, Super 15, Celtic League, Anglo Welsh Cup.
Despite your claim that 90% have not seen a game and it is only played of a handful more countries than league there are 101 registered international RU playing nations.
There is also a World Sevens competition annually.
You usually have it spot on TT (in fact you are one of the few I cannot ever remember arguing with
My initial point was the lack of satisfaction Burgess would get from playing yawnion, not the respective adulation heaped on each code. The strong nations you quote would account for less than 5% of the world population. Hardly anyone in the top 20most populace countries will have watched yawnion, most won't even have access to a TV. League has about 50 playing countries apparently, but 40 if them will be a joke, as with most of the 100+ yawnion ones. I am jealous to death of the coverage & investment yawnion gets, especially when I see the standard of the game.

Personally I reckon he will get a lot of satisfaction earning far more money, in front of bigger crowds, in bigger competitions and with far less stress on his body.
Burgess is a young lad. He could easily make his coin in RU for five years or so then return to league for a few more seasons. He will prolong his career in the "softer" code.

| I can see him doing a Sonny Bill and having a season or two of union then back to league. I just hope his skills don't get blunted playing the more restricted code.

| I wonder if this statement is part of this story?
Salford owner Dr Marwan Koukash says the club are looking to get an exemption from the salary cap in order to sign a "very special player".

An exemption from the cap? How does that work then? Would it not defeat the purpose of the cap in the first place?

They must be employing the Wigan rule.

| It's just ideal for ensuring one player becomes deeply unpopular with his teammates and leads to cliques and discord.
They're going to call it the "Schofield Clause".

| Just heard on radio that he signed with Bath from October after the RL season.
Don't we still hold his registration or something? Or was that only if he came back to league over here?

Think it was something to do with us having first refusal if he comes back to league.

Would have thought that agreement was only with original holding company and became void after first admin. And as others have said think it only covered him coming back to league anyway.

I doubt it. If you listen to KooKoo, Salford are in the frame for signing every player who's ever laced up his boots.

| He said on Twitter today that Sam was the player that he asked for special dispensation from the salary cap last week. RFL said no, so he couldn't sign him.
As you say the reality may be another story, but at least he gets the fans talking.
God I wish he had picked us as his club to rescue!
