fair enough on the other two but on basis do you class him as talented other than he's australian? the fact that canberra released him before bothering to get a replacement in place worries me more than a little. Think only reason he's been linked to us is someone has jumped to conclusions off a swap deal as part off orford deal without realising canberra had already released him.

He wouldn't have got 21 games under his belt in the NRL as a halfback without any talent.

I've only see him play twice, but he looks useful, and if we get Pryce then i'd be happier than this year with a make shift 6 and a quality 7. A quality 6 and a 7 who wants to prove himself is better IMO of course.

I've never heard of Herbert never mind seen him. With Campese out wouldn't Canberra want to keep Herbert if he was all that?

I haven't heard of him either until this week when I went looking, but remember this is the same Canberra that didn't think Dobson was all that either. And I'd take him today.

I don't subscribe to the "He's Australian so he's brilliant" theory, but I also don't necessarily think that just because an Aussie team haven't re-signed him, that he's no good. Would prefer to see him myself before judging one way or the other I think.

thats pretty much my view on Herbert if we do end up signing him. just because he's played 20 odd games for a NRL side doesnt make him a worldbeater, they obviously didnt see enough to retain him. But at the same time he must have had something to get in there in the 1st place. Maybe a change of scenery/coaching is what he needs. As you said did dobson no harm and its also the route we're going down with Ah Van.

To be honest, at this point we don't have the luxury of hanging around waiting for an 'outstanding' scrum half, we will most probably have to be happy with a 'steady away' older guy or an up and coming youngster who hasn't yet proved himself. Totally agree: trust in Potter.

But that's just a false argument. Hundreds of players join one club from another club every year. So every single player that is signed is a downgrade, a reject, as self-evidently his former club obviously didnt see enough to retain him? And yes, it is a given that the "old" club could have retained all or the vast majority of outgoing players. Eg by doubling their pay.

In fact, of the assortment of reasons that end in one player leaving and another signing, it seems to me the most important is the mix of players that the coach wants coupled with what the club can afford under the salary cap. As a result, plenty of highly talented players always have and always will change clubs, largely because they can earn more elsewhere. (Although I naturally concede that severe homesickness in freely contracting adults is a major factor too)
