| 12" of snow forecast for parts of the south of England so I expect a major emergency to be declared at the point the first snowflake falls on London.

| My car is utterly, utterly hopeless in the snow for reasons I cannot fathom. I have had to leave my car in a nearby street because it can't get up mine whereas every sodding neighbour comes and goes with ease.
If anyone knows a (genuine) reason why a Skoda Fabia Estate has all the grip of a soapy hand on a glass paperweight I'd be fascinated to know.
So yeah I'm not at work but I did build thishttps://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs160.snc3/18758_271218755827_692660827_4551271_5835581_n.jpg" >

| Quote: Blotto "The main reason we don't cope as well is because the snow is rarely as heavy and persistent for weeks not days, also the freezing type of cold is also not so prevalent. Going back to the 50's & 60's snow and very cold weather was part of the Winter scene and as such folk just got on with it, certain villages around the Country would get cut off for weeks on end.'"
We also now live in a car-obsessed culture which has led to more road blockages, people working much further afield than was previously possible, a knock-on reduction in local facilities in favour of large-scale centralised 'centres' designed around the car & people becoming soft as a consequence.
I have just seen on Look North a woman moaning it took her an hour to do her journey of 0.6 miles.

| I work from home now and get to enjoy the snow (and today the cricket) without the travelling hassle. Conversely I can't miss work due to not being able to get there.

| Quote: Bulliac "Very true. We also have the `blame` culture, no win no fee sharks who create a culture of fear around all the authorities which result in schools being closed at the first snowflake" in case someone slips and get hurt". In all honesty, I went to school during the fifties and early sixties when snow was much much heavier and longer lasting than nowadays and can`t remember EVER having school cancelled due to the weather.
I'm not entirely sure thats the reason. The school where I teach is closed, not due to health and safety but due to the fact that no staff can get in! Would it not be fairer to say that in the 50s, 60s, 70s (when I went to school) more staff lived nearer the schools in which they worked and so could get in more easily?
My children's school is open, but the vast majority of teaching staff (unusually) live near the school.

A few today have done that, opened as usual and then shut at 11. That must be far more annoying for the parents.

The first few flakes have landed in Oxfordshire, so you can expect the panic to start any minute...

| Mr Wickes on Ingleby Rd is the only place in town with a new supply of rock salt. If you're very very quick. 5 bags per customer, and theyve already sold one of two palletfuls

Tschh. In Ilkley it's Maldon sea salt or nothing on our roads.

| Have been off all day anyway. But could have made up to Harrogate for work as they replaced the roller skate like BMW 130 I had last year with 4WD VW. Like Lizzo without heating at the moment so decked out in snow boarding gear.
They were asking why Britain grinds to a halt on the news with a bit of snow before christmas. An expert said its better we put up with days like this than investing in costly infrastructure thats used infrequently. Guess we'll have to see how regular events like this become!

Bloody funny-looking Maldon sea-salt at the depot in Ilkley I drove past today then...presume this is the lower-quality stuff they dispatch to down-market places like Otley and Addingham and try to avoid contaminating Ilkley roads with? Maybe half-and-half in Burley?
