He hit Newton twice and he stayed on his feet, hardly nocked out stone cold

If I was who you refer to, then I still wouldn't. Why they an internet forum to make a serious announcement? Or any.

| Well it does look like either McDermott or Potter. Looking at what Quins fans have to say about McDermott on their forum I hope it's Potter!

| Up until about 2/3 of the way through last season the appointment of McDermott was looking to be a very astute choice by London, and he seemed to be building up a very good reputation as a coach on the back of a successful stint as an assistant at Leeds - if he'd got the Bradford job back then I'd have been delighted with the appointment.
I'm not really sure what's happened since then, but results since have obviously been terrible. Personally I believe that, unless a coach is really successful, then 3 years/seasons in the job at the same place is about the limit because players are going to stop listening to your message eventually and it's probably beneficial from both points of view that a change is then made, in Superleague the job down in London must leave a coach feel like he'd banging his head against a brick wall in so many ways that I can understand if it starts to take it's toll and leave them a bit jaded eventually.
McDermott is still popular with a lot of the fan-base and has a reasonable record in developing young players, I think it's a decent appointment but just hope he isn't, initially, given too long a contract.

| What happened to the likes of Jason Taylor and other such higher profile names. We'll probably end up with the coach we can afford rather than the coach we need. Probably speaks more about our finances than our ambition!

| If Macca's youth set up is as good as we are made to believe,no matter who the coach is and as long as they can integrate these youngsters into 1st team rugby then maybe we will have a good foundation to build upon....

Ultimately, I'm sure if finances were not an issue the club would go for the very best coach money could buy. Or I'd hope they would! But if we were to go for a coach we could not afford, what else would people cut to pay for it?
Those folk on here who slate the club for lack of "ambition" presumably do not appreciate the financial circumstances, and the fact that the club CANNOT overspend - no sugar daddy or bank to run to, no reserves tucked away. Spend too much in one area and you have to immediately cut somewhere else. The club is anyway probably having to cut back yet again because of the poor gates. Do we have 1000 or more people willing to pay £100 or more annually into a "get a more expensive coach fund"?
Folk also need to remember that Sterling has gone down the bog against the Aussie and Kiwi dollars in the last year or so, and the UK tax regime is suddenly less attractive to overseas guys than it was. That will of itself have a big bearing on how much an antipodean coach costs.

| Potter's team 3rd in the league, McDermott's team 13th.
McDermott's team on -261 pd, Potters team +265.
Potter got Catalans to the CC final, and has got Saints to the grand-final.
Imo, if they both do indeed want the job, then there is only one option.

Potter's team spending full salary cap in RL heartland in own stadium and seemingly no cash worries. Well-established team.
McDermott's team clealry not spending full salary cap, miles from RLO heartland (loads of travel etc), not in own stadium and losing millions a year. And having set up a big junior development programme pretty well from scratch. team will always be transient because of location.
Aye, no comparison!

I agree that McDermott has a tougher job, but we don't know that he would do any better for a club with better funds, support etc.
Mick Potter may have a tougher job if he comes to Odsal, but he has a good record on the pitch, and he's done great with the youngsters at Saints. If he can guide a Catalans team (that imo wasn't as good as the team we have now) to the CC then he can do well with us.

| Adey, you can't keep turning to the issues of finances for everything. Mick Potter is a better coach than Brian or Steve Mac, that's clearly very evident.
The ability to coach and motivate a bunch of players doesn't cost a penny and Mick Potter is very good at it.

| I still have my fingers crossed for a Mick Potter U-turn. Whilst a popular appointment might not attract new fans in itself, it may well just convince a few current ones to give the Bulls another chance in 2011. The crowd figures this year must be a pretty big worry for everyone at the club.
Given the fact that our quota would appear to be full for next year (if Beaver re-signs) then the coach might well be the biggest signing we make. It is difficult to see much in the way of high profile signings coming in to sell a few membership cards.

Unfortunately they won't go away though Mick - pretty well everything is influenced by them. As are most things in life generally.
Leaving aside who is the best coach - although by all objective standards Potter has had far more experience than the others, so you would expect him to be the standout? - remember also that, just as with players, you pay more for more ability. So its that F word again...
If the ability to coach and motivate a bunch of players doesn't cost a penny, why do clubs pay their coaching staff? Come on! And why do the clubs with more money tend to get the perceived "better" coaches? The better you are at something, the more you expect to get for it?
I bet Potter would cost more than either Mac? He'd be my first choice if it was fundable and the guy wanted it, and I'd have gone for him ahead of anyone from the ARL, since we surely need someone who knows the SL and local environment, and something of the club. If we go for a British coach, for whatever reason, then the only one I would be happy with would be Brian Mac. Said that right from the start.
