That's it for me too. "That was a simple, simple try...." No it bloody wasn't - it was well practised, superbly timed and took super handling skills [at pace] to get the ball to the scorer. Oh sorry I forgot, I'm getting carried away - it was really all down to the defender being out of position...

Do you mean du-mmy ru-nnar?
Like other useless commentators every time a team with the ball tries something inventive in their own half & makes a mistake he harps on about why they should just drive it in, settle it down, not try anything stu-pid.

Ironic since he was one of the most inventive and instinctive players of his generation. His older self wouldn't approve of his younger self!

Agreed completely. It's like the bald muppet's repeated chastising of any player committing foul play.

| What's John Champion doing these days?
I seem to rememeber liking him but I'm not sure how much of that was down to him not being Ray French.

| It's ironic really but everyone thinks of Eddie Waring as 'an idiot in a pork pie hat' but he had a fantastic knowledge of Rugby League and was even a Gb tour manager in his younger days !!!!
I was lucky enough to talk to him several times and his knowledge and enthusiasm was fantastic.
But when you look back Eddie, Bill McLaren, Peter O'Sullivan, Brian Johnson, David Coleman and Murray Walker were streets above a lot of today's commentators yes some could be eccentric at times but boy did they have the respect of players and fans alike !!!
There are a few lessons today's commentators could learn from them !!

Stewart Hall worthy of a mention?

Very true. Eddie was a very important figure 'back in the day', both in the media and as an administrator, a fact which is often overlooked. It was disappointing that he stayed too long in the job at the Beeb [something copied by his successor] and, to a large extent became a caricature of himself, particularly when he went onto 'it's a knockout', where he became more a figure of fun than a rugby person.

| Hmm after having a think I wouldn't mind our opening fixtures going something like this:
H - Warrington
A - Wakefield
H - Wigan
A - Castleford
H - Widnes
A - Salford
H - Leeds
Warrington are having a major restructure so to get them early on would be more beneficial for us and have a better chance of beating them first up. Get Wakey away out of the way as I feel we will have a better chance of beating them at home later in the year (Belle Vue bit of a bogey ground). With Tomkins gone and a few Wigan players moving to pastures new I feel like we will have a great oppertunity to steal a win again before they all gel. Cas, Widnes and Salford to give us a few wins early on and built momentum going into the Leeds game
I have way too much time on my hands......plus uni work is boring

Eddie Waring was a dreadful commentator, irrespective of all the other stuff said about him.
The BBC's racing coverage by Julian Wilson and Peter O'Sullivan was even worse.
