34439.jpg winning like never before. decoys. mouse traps. chicken wings. lollie pops. shepperds. the crusher. grapples. big league. In 1935 The Dragon Slayers as they were known defeated Canterbury bulldogs 91-6, which is still the biggest win in the Club's History. In 1907, the St George district had a club in the Sydney rugby union competition. Interestingly, the team's area was referred to as the 'Illawarra suburbs'. A resolution to form a St George rugby league club was made at a local meeting held in early 1908, but the movement faltered and collapsed. St George, wearing the district colours of red and white, played in the NSWRL's Third Grade competition in 1910, and formed a President's Cup team in 1911. References were found at the time to district teams being called 'The Saints'.the perfect 11

Not so much bizarre as a clash of cultures: Aussies can`t understand why we don`t go a bundle on regional matches and we can`t get a grip on why they don`t play knock out cup competitions. Vive la difference, I say. By all means suck it and see but looking at the crowd figures for our previous regional championship games we`d be lucky to get a sponsor never mind a crowd.
Have the Aussies ever had a KO cup comp? If they did, did it ever take off or was it a failure from the start?

My guess is that it`s just they way you`re brought up. In the UK we`re constantly told tales of derring do about the cup and about the supposed `magic` of Wembley, how important cup finals are, how great is is when you win, etc etc we take it in with our mother`s milk. We`re so indoctrinated with it that it makes us think the old Wembley stadium was a wonderful ground, when it was actually a bit of a dump in the middle of an industrial estate.
Like many things which are cultural it probably isn`t quite so wonderful when viewed from the outside, hence the Aussies can`t understand what all the fuss is about. For what it`s worth SOE probably falls into the same category, it`s just, on that one, we`re the ones looking from afar.

Many Aussies talk about the challenge cup and remember watching it as a boy etc etc
Their lack of a cup comp is probably more due to the extra games it would involve for players and perhaps devalue the league comp a little

Aussie players always say that don`t they. Maybe they do, I ` don`t know to be honest, maybe they just say what they think we want to hear sometimes. I don`t know about Aussie fans saying it though.
Funny thing is I know lots of people here who `always` watch the SOE on Telly but we still never get big crowds for our attempts. It`s something that`s hard to explain, I guess.
