This year neither coach made the play-offs although Smith did get a trophy. So I would say their positions in the set up are linked to form of 2 years ago. I reckon Smith will have the power to pick his assistants anyway - he probably goes with Macca cos they are buddies.

What we are talking about, to date, is the great progress the England team has made in knocking out NZ (the World Champions, who drew with Australia) and making a Final. To most that is already over-achieving for this young and untried squad.

They might even not beat Lockyer, Inglis, Slater & Co. Still to most, the performances of the likes of Burgess, Tomkins and Eastmond have us actually looking forward to the next 10 years of internationals with hope and anticipation.

Regardless of the outcome of the Final, your depressingly unsurprising take on the victory v. NZ is sadly par for your curmudgeonly course. What do you do for fun - pull the wings off beetles?
