Yep
Let's see how we get on against sides like Fev, Toulouse and York before assuming all is well and good.

| Another good, solid win against a decent team. If you'd given me these two results after the Sheffield debacle I'd have bitten your hand off. It's going to be a strange league, for example Newcastle beat Sheffield who blew us off the park. Basically outside Toulouse and Feath, you turn up not knowing what's going to happen.

| That seems to be the case Pumpy.
I was quite impressed with our attitude in this game - defence was superb and very committed, in the main and I couldn't ask for more. Dews are a decent side, so to dominate them (mostly) was a good outcome. We also played some impressive and expansive, football with ball in hand, so a good, all round, performance for my two pennorth.

| Good win. Some really good performances (Lilley & DFJ stood out for me).
Great to have a reliable kicker now too.
Scurr looks like a real prospect too.
Early days, but the squad do deserve some credit for the turnaround in effort and performance since the first 2 games. Let’s just hope it continues.

| Well we certainly played well! I’ll be the first to admit I bagged Brown from the Fev and Shef games as I thought he was gash but these past two games he has been class. Does well under the kick and his backing up was really good.
As much as I like DFJ and his attitude (he was outstanding yesterday) I still think he lacks a little height and the better teams will target him with kicks.
Forwards were class! Does Crossley ever stop?

I've huge respect for relentless, unflashy workhorses like Crossley.. Might not make the most yards but will always put his hand up to drive it in, and get stuck in when you're defending. Your Andy Lynch, Roy Powell etc go under the radar but they put in some serious graft for whoever they play for.

To be fair, I would see the last 3 opponents are more genuine benchmarks that Fev or Toulouse. We must be a considerable sum of money behind Fev on squad spend.
I thought the performance yesterday was another improvement on the Fax game and very solid overall. Nothing too flashy but some good quality moments for some of the tries and some good composure when Dewsbury applied some pressure in the 2nd half. Perhaps one or two more leaders in the squad like Brough/Murphy etc will benefit us this year.

In terms of money being spent, totally agree... we are way behind all three in terms of spend. However it is the mentality of competing against the clubs I'm interested in.
Also, don't forget that this is the squad that the club based its "Destination Super League" marketing campaign on. Rightly or wrongly, I expect us to be beating the likes of Sheffield, Dewsbury and Whitehaven if we are expected to be challenging for a playoff spot.
But ultimately, its our style of play and game plan that for me is the reason I'd like to see a change of coach. I'm fed up of the five drives and a kick tactic employed. Defense may win games, but it doesn't say you can't attack with confidence at the same time.

| I'm just happy the defence turned up this week but I agree the younger, more creative coaches do play a more engaging brand of Rugby.

| It's worth remembering in each of the last two games, we've scored length of the field tries by showing a willingness to shift the ball out to the fast blokes rather than play it safe. Are we really quite as conservative as people make out?

| IIRC the long range tries to Brown and Pickersgill were the result of good carries off our line rather than shifting the ball.
I’m not so sure about the aesthetic argument. I’d rather support a winning team than one that chucks the ball around nicely but comes up short (Rohan Smith’s team? Remember that Fev play off game?). Besides you have to play it safe in certain areas and earn the right to play the fancy stuff. We can’t expect champagne rugby all the time and I’m sure you know all that. Remember during Kear’s time we have lost our two halfbacks that had any flair (Chisholm and Keyes) and both those players had their own issues. Since then we’ve had players who are very different or who are learning the game. You can only work with what you’ve got. Add to that the fact that we’ve had to rebuild the rest of the squad thanks to Chalmers making a c0ck up of the finances and you’re back to square one.

| Don't forget the pitch at Dewsbury isn't exactly designed for free flowing rugby.
Agree with Bullseye comments above about Rohan Smith. Didn't we score a combined score of 150 points or something ridcoulous against the bottom two. We then didn't even look like scoring against Fev. Could still be playing that game today and we still wouldn't have scored.
I actually don't think we're that bad rugby wise. Broughs try Sunday was some superb rugby. Brad England try was also good to watch. The week before DFJ scored in the corner was well worked. Dan Fleming being superbly put through a gap. They're decent, well worked rugby tries IMO I think we did go through a stage under Kear where it was 5 drives and an uncontested kick to the corner, but I'm not seeing that now.

| My main issue with Kear’s coaching is his attitude to last tackle plays when we’re on the opposition line. We’ve often got to the situation where we hand the ball over rather than put in an attacking kick. That’s not good enough in my opinion. I’ve lost count of the times when watching a game on TV when Kear is co-commentator when this has happened and he’s said “it’s not a bad place to turn the ball over” as if it’s good play.
I know we’re a long way from elite level but we ought to aspire to be better on last tackle plays. We need to build pressure and not simply hand the ball over. In the NRL you almost never see a handover on the last tackle.
