| After the number of times it has happened to us, I find I can bear Stains' discomfiture with considerable fortitude if I am honest...
Still does not change the fact that we did not benefit from it, Leeds did and that we never got a shot at getting to OT cos of Stains' inexplicably awful performance against Cats.

It's taken 10 years for saints to be screwed in a grand final by a video ref. Shame we never benefited but hey ho.

| Can't say I feel much sympathy after our past history with St Helens in GF's
It was a shocking decision - clearly offside
But then again

| Awful call from Bentham, I'd be feeling pretty filthy about the decision if I was a Saint. But I can't say I have too much sympathy for them.. just a shame that is was Leeds that benefited..

It was annoying me so I grabbed a ruler at one stage and put it on the TV. His foot was infront of the ball by my calculations

| It was offside but Saints get all the luck in grand finals and now they know how we felt in 1999 and 2002 but imo i thought leeds deserved to win but wasn't the best of games, well done Leeds, Sinfield man of the match what an absolute joke.

| It was clearly offside by half a yard and it just proves that its a waste of time having a video ref. The sport of Rugby league is becoming a laughing stock! If the RL want to fix games then surely they could be a bit more subtle!

| A quick look at the Offside rule shows it just says this
When off side 1. A player is off side except when he is in his own ingoal
if the ball touches, is touched, held or kicked, by
one of his own team behind him.'"
According to the word Sky got from the VR, he based the decision on both feet being behind the ball when it was kicked. Although there is no mention of the ball in the rule.
There is no doubt that the player's torso was well ahead of the kicker's (but he was leaning forward and the kicker was leaning back. But torsos don't apparently matter; eg when defending on your own line, both feet must be on or behind the line. There's nothing to stop your torso leaning over it. Is there?
There is much more doubt as to exactly how far the kicking foot was ahead of the nearest white line. I don't think the chaser's feet were ahead of the ball.
Personally I reckon the rule means (or should mean) that you mentally mark the spot where the kicking foot is in relation to the pitch, and if the other player's feet are both not ahead of that point, then he's not offside. Looking at it like that, I don't think anyone can say it was offside.

I think most people people are informed enough on here to know that the offside ruling has nothing to do with the players torso.
I made my decision comparing the back foot of the kicker when he makes contact with the ball to the position of the chaser's feet. My view was that Smith did not have both feet in line or behind the back foot of McGuire.
