Someone's put the entire (well ahem!) 1982 Premiership game between Hull KR and Northern on you tube. It's entertaining viewing between the mayhem. Robin Whitfield really didn't have a good game that day!

Suggest you seek it out. See a young Ellery Hanley and Brian Noble. Jeff Grayshon and Keith Mumby. Andy Robinson and Dean Carroll (RIP) at halfback.

The game's certainly cleaned up since those days thankfully.

I was there that day, if Jeff hadn't lead the team off having been sent off himself someone would have been seriously injured or maybe worse, it had to be done

Some utterly bizarre decisions by Whitfield. Anyone that thinks refereeing standards have dropped should watch this.

To be utterly fair to Robin Whitfield he simply lost control and panicked. That doesn't absolve him from blame - he had the chance to nip it in the bud and didn't.

To be right, the average RL player was always prepared to respect the ref and play to the whistle, whether he believed the decision right or wrong, but (imo) a typical and very partisan Rovers crowd cowed the referee that night. I would have probably done the same in his shoes, though I hope I would have had the guts to hand in my resignation afterwards.

To be fair to the RFL (not like me, I know) they were in a cleft stick. They had absolutely no alternative but to back the referee, which they did. Safe to say that few came out of it with any credit, though Jeff Grayshon was one who certainly did.

My overiding memory of that day was the coach journey home.It seemed some of the Rovers fans took exception to our early exit from the field and decided it would be a good idea to relieve our mode of transport home of its windows.Never did get round to thanking them for that. The game itself was pretty much utter carnage from start to its early finnish.Happy Days.

Just watched it in fast forward. If I missed anything I apologise, but for a point who are the commentators? I know who the main commentator was but who was Alan, the co commentator?

I thought it was Redfearn but wasn't sure

Main commentator was Alan Guilfoyle, who I knew very well in the 80s. We affectionately called him Boss Hog from Dukes of Hazard, a real good man. He was mainly a Northern scout but also coached us a bit with the Northern colts at the time

Thanks; have heard him on several Northern YouTube commentaries and think he is very good. He explains moves and tactics and has great accent. As in " Ull ".

Watching that video of the game couldn't help thinking if we had Len Casey(Also Hull KR favourite and hard man) and Alan Rathbone playing, plus no doubt a couple others, I wonder if it would of been a different game

Also wonder how a hard as nails Jeff Grayshon would go on in today's game

I'm a Bradford fan and as I said earlier in this post, I was there that day, but one thing I have allways said about players of yester year, paul rose and Phil Lowe would have Deffo been at home in today's game 100% no doubt

Oh yes I agree. But the game is too soft now for real hard men. If you look through all teams now you can't think there is any real hard men, like Casey, Grayshon, Thompson, which makes the game poorer in my opinion

This game came up in conversation a few week ago. I played with the late Dean Carroll and Northerns unused sub from this game, Kevin Morgan, in the early 90s at West Bowling and became good friends with them both. As a centre to play outside these 2 was a dream, scored lots of tries without finger laid on me

Also I mentioned Kevin Morgan told me at half time the Northern directors told Grayshon to bring the team off if anymore sendings off. To which they later said they knew nothing about it

What great players they were.None of them knew what a backward step was and all loved playing for Sir Peter of Fox.Jeff had a heart attack a couple of years back but happily is still with us albeit with a couple of dodgy knees.Talking of old players I see Ian Van Bellan suffered a stroke a couple of weeks back and is in hospital.Im sure we all wish him a speedy recovery.

Jeff had a bit of pace in his early years and developed from a running second row into a super ball-handling prop as the years went by. His ability, in his latter years, of off loading whilst he had three or four men swinging at him and hanginig off his neck, AND still walking forward, was just amazing.

I've no doubts - Jeff would have been top class in any era, and with full time training and not spending every day on a building site he'd have been even better.
