| In an attempt to try and lighten what has been a pretty heavy week to say the least, over a pint last night we were talking about the Awesome Foursome and who might break into that quartet.
My mate said Andy Lynch would, but I disagreed. Being an old git albeit with a long memory, I added Jimmy Thompson might replace Brian MacD as the tackling workhorse. Going back even farther Big Jim Mills, with his fearsome running (and more than a touch of the mongrel about him!) might replace Stuart Fielden.
Any more choices.

Karl, super palyer as he was, was mainly a second row though - I go for Big Jeff Greyshon, possibly the best prop we ever had.

I agree about Thompson, but wouldnt have Mills over Fielden. Mills was ok for us but his career really blossomed later, as did his hard man image. In fact when he first joined us he was criticised for being "a bit soft"!
I really liked Bill Ramsay. Great handling ability. Not sure who he would replace though.

| JP after his move to prop could have had a chance imo.
Think we all agree it is very hard to replace any of them as they all did their jobs to perfection.

When I am king you will be first against the wall.
With your opinion which is of no consequence at all.: |
|
| Other props worth mentioning:
Frank Whitcombe & Len Higson (both well before my time, but heroes to my Dad).
David Hill (Bren's Dad)
Phil Jackson (2nd row convert who was briefly devastating at prop)
David Hobbs (ultimate multi-tasker)
Ian van Bellen (the legend of Selwyn)

Kelvin Skerrett absolutely, probably at the expense of Paul Anderson.

Jim was known to frequent the Kings Head on Halifax Rd when he was at Bradford, the then landlord was Harry Womersley who was Northern chairman and one time chair of the RFL. One night in the lounge, (this is Jim, not Harry) he put his pint on a shelf with some others and then leant on the shelf with his considerable shoulder, which brought the shelf off the wall. The shelf, btw was bolted right through the wall. He was a big lad was Jim Mills and I can guarantee no-one in the 'Head' ever called him soft!
I agree his best years were later at Widnes, though.

Likewise Brian Hogan. Always looked a bit of a pudding for us, but was excellent for Widnes.

Thought Harry owned The Coll down Huddersfield Road?

He did, but it was after the King's Head. I think Harry was the one who changed the name to The Touchdown. IIRC, I think it was when he got the position of Chairman of the RFL and he felt he needed a 'posher' establishment. Not really sure if that's what he got, if I'm honest.
