I imagine that if he's not got a good relationship with the club then he may end up lifting material from other sources. He didn't get on with Lowes (and I think Lowes has to shoulder some blame there) but he also annoyed Caro recently with a sloppy article. He's building a relationship with Smith. I get the feeling there's definitely no love lost between him and Green and Ferres. I know there has been annoyance at the slant of some articles purporting to give Ferres's views.
I think the journalist that covers the club needs to maintain good relationships and may have to sacrifice some of his impartiality for that. Otherwise the bread and butter articles lack the quality that you can only get from having a friendly and close relationship.
It can be up to other journalists to cover the "off field" challenges. They don't have to get a foot in the door everyday so can take a tougher line if need be.
