Maybe he would indeed - although any package would still probably be far from negligible, I suspect. But my point remains - we can't go round signing up people unless we have cap space (and quota slots) free, and they represent value for money, no matter how keen we are!
Remember that ALL of a player/coach's package counts under the cap. So I guess you'd need to cuat a deal where we agreed to pay him £5 a year for one year as a player, and he coaches for free. Oh, and someone loans him a decent amount of money to cover his living expenses etc. And then from year 2 onwards he gets £lots a year as a coach. Witha first-year "signing-on" payment that may or may not be not dissimilar to what he might otherwise have earned in the previous year as a player... To avoid cap problems. It must be possible - I'm sure Wigan and Deacs could give us some tips...?
