I don't see how selecting Deacon was an automatic one anyway, it would have been a hell of a difficult choice for Macca. Surely the choice would have been somewhat based on how things went in training that week?
Over the last few seasons we haven't had anyone else to pick in his place anyway, so your point is somewhat moot.
