| Quote: Steve Ella's Beard "To be fair, rather than just be being mischievous like you're being, Bellamy developed and debuted all of those players - he's a tremendous coach. Can't see anything other than staying with the Storm and NSW, and likely Australia after Sheens.'"
What are you talking about? Inglis was a star long before he made his debut. You make Bellamy sound like some kind of modern day Michelangelo, moulding Inglis magically out of clay. The truth is everyone knew Inglis was the business at 16. He was a BORN RL player.
The facts are simple - Melbourne Storm - Bellamy's team - BOUGHT their silverware and came as close as anyone has done to completely redefining the word "cheating" in sport. They are a stain on the history of the game and everyone associated with the club will forever have a question mark next to them.

I don't think Gus Gould agrees with you.

I would agree with that if they had done what Wigan did in the late 80's and early 90's and lured talented players from other clubs with the promises of riches - blatantly ignoring the cap to further their own gain.
The fact is that the majority of players at Storm came through the junior set up. They have cheated in so much as they have paid inflated salaries in order to keep their hands on the talent that they as a club have produced. Im not condoning what they have done, I still think they cheated the system, but I think this case alone opens up a wider issue about the salary cap in general. Clubs who work hard to develop young players should reap the benefits of that players skills when they hit the top of their game. Younger players breaking into first team who then go on to become internationals (thus demanding increased contracts) - Kyle Eastmond the most recent example - should only have a proportion of their contract count towards the salary cap - say 80%. That way, clubs can reward players and recognise their standing in the game whilst themselves benefitting from that players service.
If a team ends up with a squad of 25 BRITISH players all internationals earning 20% more than their contemporaries at other clubs then were is the problem? They are rewarded for long service to the club and for their loyalty with a larger contract.
If a club can afford it, I dont see an issue with rewarding player development. Everyone is a winner.

That is a good point by Gus. Why should teams that develop young talent be punished for it. If teams like the Roosters are not able to produce good young players then they should be punished for it not bailed out. There does need to be a rethink regarding club trained players wages counting against the salary cap.
On the other hand it does not change the fact that Melbourne cheated and went to great lengths to try and get away with it.

The problem is that only a handful of teams could afford it. Leeds, Warrington and possibly Wigoon and Hull at a push.
You have to look at the Goons for the reason why the cap has to stay low, clubs dont make profit with the cap, if you allow loopholes to bump up salaries more clubs would go to the wall.

I think this is the most important point, teams should be rewarded for bringing youngsters through their own academy. This kind of system, which is similar to the one which Rogues has been suggesting for a while, needs to be in place. Yes, Melbourne cheated and what they did can't be condoned, but they shouldn't have been put in such a position in which they are punished for developing the best players in the world themselves.
The salary cap is working, but it is soon going to become outdated. It needs to be modified as more young English players begin to make the grade.

I don't think anyone has named dropped official speculation in the press. There was a blog by one of the RL journalists who said he'd bet we'll be getting Ricky Stuart. Seems to be plenty of talk about Justin Morgan being a possibility, I was told about that a long time before Saints actually announced Harry Potter was leaving.

| David Fairleigh is not as daft at it sounds. He's with the Central Coast Bears who are trying to get into the NRL.. He may come over to get some coaching experience at a higher level than the NSW Cup in rediness for the NRL entry.

they are trying to get into the NRL, so presumably if the bid is succesful he would go back there in a couple of years. Personally, I think we need some stability for the next 4/5 years and I dont think we should be going down the route of having to find a new coach every 3 years.

| Couldn't see it ever happening for many reason, but....
The dream
If saints had a bank to break they should pull out all the stops to tempt Shaun Edwards from RU.
The reality
i like many have this funny feeling it will be Morgan though.
