| Quote: Rogues Gallery "I don't remember that happening, and even if it did what has that to do with the comparison between a Rugby League legend in Edwards and a journeyman in Martyn.
Did different coaches pick Edwards for Great Britain?
Did different coaches reject Martyn for Great Britain?
In 50 or more years which one do you think will be remembered?
What it shows is that Martyn was a good player, Edwards was a great player.'"
In 50yrs time Tommy will be remembered as a Saints legend whereas Edwards wiil be remembered as a Union coach nothing to do with Wigan.

My friend, the fact that you don't remember Iro and Shelford playing in the same side as Edwards and Gregory in 1987 (remember, you where World Champions?) not only astounds me but also loses any respect I previously may have had for your posts.
PS for your perusal I've added an '87 game onto You tube for you - take a look - you might learn something.

I stand corrected. They were in our 1989 Wembley winning team.
What about the others I mentioned? And still Iro and Shelford were not big name signings at the time. Were they?

Iro certainly was, he was the biggest thing to come from NZ for years as I recall.

I was talking to a female saints fan a few weeks ago and it caused this stir of a thread on Southstander - forums.rlfans.com/viewtopic.php?t=410350&start=0
Anyways we both agreed that Tommy Martyn was our favourite saints player to play for you during the summer era. I was rather disappointed when he left to go a division below as a rugby league fan but not as a rhinos fan!

As a 19 year old amateur? Get real.
He was a massive signing for you as he had already proved himself with Wigan, Leeds and internationally. He was an unproven bit of a kid with lots of potential when we signed him.

| Tommy was a GOD. I love the guy. An indivdiual in many ways - like a Ginloa or Cantona or Di Canio of RL. However, he was hampered by injury and some inconsistency in how he played. But thankfully IM rescued him from Hanley's mishandling the the rest is history.
However, as a half-back pairing, I would argue that the 2006 edition Pryce and Long is more destructive and a better all round combination and the best I've seen at Saints. That side was unstoppable (losing 4 games in a year by 4/3/2/1 pts) and the half-backs (to be fair on the back of an awesome pack) were clinical.

He was so good the Engalnd and GB coaches didn't want him.
But he was too good for the coaches or he was always injured.
In best Alan Sugar mode.
"You're fired"
He was a good club journeyman, no more no less.
Another Parry Gordon.'"
I am wetting myself at how stupid Rogues is looking in this post. Truth is, he tries to disguise his Wigan bias in a number of ways that Alistair Campbell would relish, but the crap always rises to the top.
Particularly humour-some is the 'well, his club coach wanted rid of him'.... Ahem, was this the same coach who wanted to replace Keiron Cunningham with Richard Pachniuk?
I know it is churlish to mention that this same coach also wanted to bring such big hitters as Martin Moana to KR, but excuse me for digressing.
Tommy Martyn had the gifts that is so lacking in our modern day half backs. That RG mentions Danny the crab, and 10 minute Harris in the same catagory of Harris is astounding.
And yet, I suppose this is what comes of dilligently subscribing to the prevailing Noble-esque philosophy of 5 drives and a kick.
Something that will come naturally to old cherry and white eyes over the lump who can never bring himself to utter the herecy that his magical Wigan team have long been on the wane, and the Red Vee - where Martyn was especially instrumental - has eclipsed them in SL.
