Of course he is. Wellens is safe, but offers nothing in attack. The world has moved on from picking the guy who can catch best as your fullback.
All the world's best fullbacks make mistakes, Billy Slater, Sam Tomkins included. It's a primarily attacking position and we're losing out. Hopefully Brown can see this and although I doubt this is true (he's under contract with Huddersfield until 2014 and we're not going to be paying transfer fees) it would be a positive step into the future.

I think we should definitely bin Wello for Grix, given Grix's massive attacking superiority, what with Grix making fewer busts and scoring fewer tries than Wello, with the same number of clean breaks and assists.
Such a huge leap forward in attack more than justifies him making twice as many errors as Wello and missing about four times more tackles than Wello.
What a player, sign him up.

| I can't see any point in signing Grix at all and can't see anywhere where he'd play in Saints' current starting 17. He's the very definition of average and even if Wello, Lomax and Hohaia all stepped on landmines tomorrow then I reckon we'd still be better off trying out some of the young 'uns like Swift or Ashe for a season or 2 instead. That, added to the years he still has on his contract and therefore signing fee, marks this down firmly in the "preposterous made-up rumour" category.

He's primarily been playing stand off, so not a comparison you can make with stats IMO. I doubt this rumour is true, it sounds highly unlikely to be true, so it's not like we need to argue this point.
But getting shot of Wello at fullback is a must, surely people can see that now?

| Wellens is our leading tryscorer this season, still as dependable as ever and links into the line well on attack...granted he is getting old now and we do need to think about a replacement for him, but would be more than happy to have him for next year before Grix
Rather than sign Grix up, I would rather see either Makinson to full back, or even Hohaia to full back and Gaskell to 6 as both of these options would be better than signing an average at best player who is nowhere near good enough to play in the Red V

Methinks you jest. Either that or your on wacky backy. Sorry saddened cant possibly agree with you. Wellens has been a stand out player this season and you've just got it in for him.
Very sad Saddened

How old are you? Kind of feels like you are about 12 ish? Wellens has been a very good player for us, a legendary figure. But he's been a shadow of his former self for a while and whilst still competent he really does lack in every area that is important for a modern day fullback.

So how come, whilst I accept some of his shortcomings due to his age, that many authorities in the game still regard Wellens as, and cite him accordingly, as one of the best full backs around in SL?

| Wouldn't want Grix taking Gaskell's role in the side. Wouldn't want Grix taking Makinson and Swift's role in the side when Wellens steps aside.
No thanks.

He does what a full back should do exceptionally.
Unrivalled under the high ball, one of the best tacklers around and his positional sense is great. Chimes into the attack at the right time, look at Warrington away this year as an example.
People are quick to mock his speed, no pun intended but i bet they'd take him in their side. Id rather have had Wellens without speed than someone like Richie Mathers for the last few years.

A few years ago yes, not anymore. He has been at fault for too many tries this season for my liking. Some of his attempts have been laughable. Unfortunately some fans allow loyalty to get in the way of reality.

Because he's such a nice guy. It's hard to criticise Wello because of what he's done for the club. I feel sick every time I slag him off on here, the man has bled for the club so many times and put his all into it for more than a decade.
Wello could do what he's doing now, (i.e taking the odd bomb, making the odd tackle, backing up and running onto a few balls near the opposition line to score) until he's 40 comfortably. Does that mean we should let him?
IMO Wello has appeared to be performing better under Rush and KC because he's not as involved in the attack. He's not attempting to chime into the line as much and therefore is being noticed for dying with the ball and wasting tackles. A good example is the Catalans match, what did Wello do during that game? He's not around to make the tackles he used to, he's made a fool of himself several times in one on ones over the past couple of seasons and his contribution to the attack is that of a 'master', he still knows what to do so will get plenty of tries as he has the game knowhow and savvy to be in those positions, but he's not a threat at all. Sam Tomkins gets the ball in your 20 and you close your eyes, he gets it in broken play you start screaming. Wello gets it in broken play you discuss mowing the lawn or the weather, he gets it in the opposition 20 and the opposition fans breath a sigh of relief.
