as you well know i meant 2 specialised centres'"

I thought he started well at centre, hopefully Soliola will be the man

Quote: Donkey OTay "He never said we will struggle, he said we might. It's true we might. But looking at some of these youngsters coming through I don't think we will struggle. We'll finish in the top four and I think this team will only get stronger as the season goes on. Hull will run out of steam, they're too old.

Saints should be starting to come together by the time the play offs start. But being realistic I think 2011 will see a new era for for Saints and another 10 years of being the team to beat.

Trouble is for many short sighted fans, finishing 3rd or 4th will mean a disaster.'"

I was at the KC stadium last week watching my team get a bit of a battering by Hull's pack, believe me, they are a totally different proposition to last years and will be one of the most aggressive and dominant in SL this year, providing they don't give away too many penalties. Fitzgibbon looked athletic and impressive for his age, (in the Menzies mould) and O'Meley and Luaki were very aggressive and difficult to contain. I don't think they will run out of steam. Longy dictating play made a big difference to them as well, they will need to keep him injury free. The outside backs are a mixed bag, some talented young kids (Briscoe, Turner, Hall, Tansey with some experience, Yeaman, Calderweood, Whiting). Although it pains me to say it, I think they might be dark horses this year. Think you will beat them though getting them first up, I think they are only having 1 hit out for the first team before the season starts so will be under done for 1st game. I still expect you to be top 4 and hopefully we will be able to be as competitive as last year. Most KR fans will be happy with top 6. Good luck against Hull!!

Longy could be right. I think we needed a monster forward (if Soliola plays centre) or a skillful centre (if Soliola plays second row) to bolster our squad. Hopefully along with our new stadium, 2011 will bring some new world class signings.

Agree, I'd say our pack is definitely our strength. We have a decent set of props and if Sia or Puletua is used in the back row we have size and mobility with Wilkin and Flannery there aswell. Add in the three hookers we have and our pack is as good and creative as anyone's.

The problem comes with the backs, who need a yard of space extra to make breaks due to their lack of out and out pace. Eastmond helps cure the problem, but we could do with a fast winger and a full back.

Decent seasons from Wheeler and Lomax in the centre and wing or full back would change that. Whilst neither are off a shovel like Penny, neither are slouches.

I'm hoping both will get a number of games this year.

I think will see both integrating into the first team squad this year. Both showed glimpses, particularly Wheeler that they will be future first team regulars. I think it's a big year for Wellens and the Centre spot is still open for Wheeler IMO, despite Sia's arrival.

for me ade gardner is the one who should be looking out for his place, his form has been consistently poor over the last 2 years and seems to have lost his pace, is this down to alack of confidence? maybe it is time to give wheeler or armstrong a chance on the wing?

Long is hardly likely to say "I expect Saints to blast the opposition away in their 1st game" is he?

I think your right to be optimistic for the furture with the great kids your bringing through, the only negative is that Leeds brought Sinfield in in 2000, Burrow and Diskin in 2001 and it still took until 2004 to win a trophy. Rome wasn't built in a day and i think it may take a little time to blood your kids but you are on the right track. Lets hope other clubs follow these examples and come 2013 we might not have to be second best, lets hope for the best super league so far, good luck

Um, yes and no.

Sinfield actually made his debut for leeds in 97. The rest of leeds core youngters weren't regulars until 03, when they nearly won the CC and a season later they were champions.

Saints will know pretty quick if their youngsters have what it takes to win trophies.

Sinfield signed for Leeds in 97 debut late 1999
Burrow and Diskin made their debuts in super league in 2001, my point was that even though we had great academy players it takes time to build a great team adn yes we were close in 2003 i remember the heartbreak

I'm sure the Saints fans will remember only too well the Wigan youngsters of 2003 / 2004 and how they were tipped to be the next big things.

It doesn't always work out, and I have a feeling that it won't at Saints either. Wigan didn't have the old heads to look after them, do Saints?
