I've no problem with him learning his trade on the wing. But the British game has such chronic shortage of quality centre's, it would be a shame not to try him there at the very least. When you look at some of the dross currently running around at centre in SL it's a damn near disgrace.

| Charnley played centre for Hull KR a couple of seasons back on loan I think.
I think he could do a job at centre, but the way he is going over the last 12-18 months is it worth moving him just yet?

| You could move him but does that then leave a hole on the wing, you get a better centre maybe, but if he passes it out and the winger cannot score. It nulifies your attack.
It's like the discussion at Saints where there are 4 or 5 players who could play half back. But whether they should is another matter, if you can get them all playing in differing roles, it makes the team more effective, rather than putting 2 at halfback, who are the best in other positions, therefore leaving those other positions with inferior choices.
Best half back at Wigan is arguably Tomkins, but would finch be a better FB. Putting Tomkins at Halfback takes finch out of the game and so reduces Wigan as a threat, would putting Charnley in the centre put a more inferior player on the wing so reduce them as a threat?

| It may be something that Wigan will try when Roberts or Ryan King come back from injury. At some stage this season Wigan will also give Matty Russell a game at fullback and Sam at 6

I hope we see that. Fans may complain about our strength in depth in the three quarters, but the blooding of Russel and King will go a long way to solving that. Plus we'd go from a reasonably quick team to a ballistic one with those two on board.

I don't know what Saints fans as neutrals think, or as neutral as Saints fan's can be. But the more and more I see Charnley play, the more I think he's wasted on the wing. I'd personally look to move him inside to centre this season. Particularly when you take into account Carmont will be leaving at season end.'"
The first time I saw charnley play was on loan to hull kr and I knew straight away he was going to be good player.
I think he should stay out on the wing for now and let him develop and see if he can progress to a centre but at the moment don't try and fix what's not broken.
I don't like to say it but I think he's a very very good player the pies have there.

Jeez he won't get many higher compliments then that. If we do move him to the centre spot at some point and he becomes anything like as good as Newlove was he'll be doing very well.
I'd leave him on the wing for now but at points throughout the season give him a shot at centre to ready him for taking Carmonts spot next year.

| Nobody fancy talking about the doom and gloom thats going on at Wigan? The way we're all calling for a coach to be sacked and how the sudden realisation that our youngsters are nothing more than one season wonders has sunk in? Or is that another team....

| If anyone can find 10 minutes or so, read ALL this thread from the very first entry and if you were one of the posters on the first 7 or 8 pages let's have another comment now explaining how your mind was working at the time and what you think of the Saints situation now. For me it makes embarrassing reading. I don't think we'll get a lot of gloating from the Wigan fans on here, their results now do the talking.

We have just the same knee-jerkery on our board... Many were ready to hang themselves after the Hudds loss, just look at the table after 5 games and it puts things in perspective... Tis an interesting season so far...
