| I see no issue with Lance coming in at half back. Gaskell had a rest this year when leon came back and has looked even better for it than before when he was playing week in and week out.
Those defensive errors seam to have left him. He is hitting the lines really well and linking on both sides of the pitch. Thats two holes that people said he had in his game toned up in one season.
As for slow. I really think people confuse things. He is a tall lad therefore his legs dont need to go rapidly to cover the same ground. If you look at sprinters they are not using and explosive running style except at the start as it shortens your stride.
The difference is fast over distance and acceleration from a standing start. Anyone who saw his break yesterday cannot call him slow he was on tomkins in seconds. Just good fb play and lack of experience meant he took the wrong option. For me he could have kept the ball and not passed but he needed to stay close to the man to keep the fb in two minds turning the opposite way left the cover defence with just one man to go for.
There are plently of births for a half back. Loose forward. hooker. fb. Lance can offer support and experience to the two lads in any of these roles and lets not forget we do get injuries.

It's easy to see how he lost his place at fullback. Young kiwi Locke has been outstanding this year.

| As Hohaia has been given the 6 shirt where's Gaskell going to play?
Anyone think he may take Meli's place at left centre or would the combination with Foster be too inexperienced.
Surely by now Gaskell's too good to be left out of the 17?

He signed a three year deal during 2011 so he's with us for three more seasons. He's a year behind Lomax in his first team experience and I think he suffered a bit as a result of being thrown in at the deep end during 2011. He certainly suffered physically given that he had to have a hernia op. I reckon it will be good for him if he can drop in and out of games for chunks of this season. Hopefully Simmons will train the three of them together like he did Pryce/Lomax/Gaskell last season.
And when all is said and done, Hohaia has been brought over in part for his utility value so if injuries occur at hooker or scrum half or even at fullback, Hohaia will be the one to move rather than Gaskell.

| Should imagine Simmonds would want a partnership going ASAP with Lomax and Hohaia, expect Lomax to learn a lot from Lance.
This would mean Gaskell being our bench player for the start of the season, when one of our back 3 gets rested reckon Roby will go LF and Hohaia to no 9, allowing Gaskell to operate at 6.

I suspect he will be the back on the bench. I have a feeling that during games we may throw Roby in at loose for spells with Lance moving to 9 .. or maybe sharing 9/13 with Roby with Gaskell coming on at 6.
Reading Royce's comments in the League Express I suspect Lance will be our backup 9 if Roby gets a knock or needs a rest which will give Gaskell game time at 6 too.
