| Quote: Mugwump "Why the big rush for Craig Bellamy? It shouldn't be too difficult for any modestly gifted Aussie coach to succeed with a team that secretly plays with a second deck of cards out of sight. Even Eric Hughes would struggle to turn Greg Inglis, Smith, Folau etc. into bad players.
The best should be judged on results achieved WITHIN THE RULES, not outside of them.'"
To be fair, rather than just be being mischievous like you're being, Bellamy developed and debuted all of those players - he's a tremendous coach. Can't see anything other than staying with the Storm and NSW, and likely Australia after Sheens.

no denying that they are good players - but effectively (and officially) Craig Bellamy has won very little, if anything, in his coaching career. if we are going for a big name (and big money) coach, I would prefer one with something to his name.
There also has to be questions raised about Bellamy's role in the scandal at Melbourne - do we need the problems that could arise due to that, especially if criminal proceedings go ahead in the case.

| Quite suprised to be honest.
I get the feeling you're going to keep getting better under potter and he's good with the young players. Morgan will be a good choice because he looks good in sunglasses and can have a cocky edge. That's all you need.

| I merely suggested Meninga as a realistic rumour.
He wouldnt be my first choice either.
Morgan wouldnt be a bad shout, but surely a bit too much of the millwards for our board.
It would be nice to think we could attract a good former NRL coach but it looks harder and harder for them to get back to the NRL afterwards and whose available who wants to come here?
lets face it were addicted to NRL coaches now it would be nice to try a good assistant but are there really any standouts?
I`m trying to think if millward was the last NL coach to succesfully step up
Then again look at what we could of had

| I like Morgan, and what he acheived with both Toulouse and Hull KR. I think that perhaps he has done all he can with the resources at Hull KR, and the time might have come for a change in scenery for him.
Wouldnt be my first choice - but i wouldnt be as upset as some people seem to be about it.

| Took a while for Harry to win me over, and I was extremely concerned about the brand of RL we were playing last season - however, the leash seems to have been loosened on our attacking play and the young lads seem to be flourishing.
I'd have liked to have seen him give us another season.

| I dont believe for one minute that fans have influenced Mick Potters decision to go to pastures new.
Its a fact of life that if you sign a highly rated young up and coming coach from Australia they generally dont hang around long before they go back down under to take up a first grade post in the NRL. Its something Wigan fans will need to come to terms with re Michael Mcguire. I personally cant see him lasting more than 2 seasons at Wigan before someone down under comes knocking. Huddersfield fans are already becoming resigned to losing Nathan Brown.
The SL is very much the finishing school for prospective NRL coaches.
The only aussie coaches that hang around for any extended period, are generally those that arent considered good enough by the aussies.
Potter has got a very impressive CV to take down under with him. He can say he has coached a new start up team to a grand final eg Challenge cup and also got them in the playoffs within a couple of years of their creation. Winning SL coach of the year in the process.
He can also point to the development of French players like Thomas Bosc, who he turned from a winger into a top class half back.
Moving on from Catalans he can point to successfully managing the transitional period of St.Helens as old legends are put out to pasture. He can show how he took that side to a grand final, against the odds, in his first year, and has helped in developing the talents of numerous st.helens young guns to the extent that a side full of under 21 players can compete with the best.
He can point out that he can coach different styles of RL, be it hard graft wrestle RL as shown in 2009 or flamboyant attacking RL in 2010.
Mick for me would make an outstanding coach for a new NRL franchise, or maybe a traditional NRL club wanting to rediscover that old magic.
As for his replacement, It sadly has to come from down under. Unfortunately i just dont think there is the culture within the UK to develop modern coaches.
We have seen on these forums how the British mentality is to go for a big name ex player, rather than someone with the scientific knowlege, man management skills and creative ability to manage a team.
This viewpoint is reflected throughout our sporting society, and is not just confined to RL. Soccer is full of ex star turns being thrown in at the deep end, only to drown. The end result of course is the Premiership is now full of experienced continental coaches.
Look at RU where former playing legend Martin Johnson was considered the right man to coach England to success, despite a total lack of experience. His side has been a complete and utter disaster.
Its why i dispair when i hear fans say give Scully the Job or give Joynty or Keiron the top job.
To use the analogy, If my car needed servicing, i wouldnt take it to be fixed by someone who could merely drive a car well, i would look for a time served car mechanic with the right experience training and equipment.

| I reckon the upturn coincided perfectly with Big Mac announcing Potter's departure to the players.

I'm with you. With the greatest respect to Mick, I don't think he was the one who instigated an upturn in performance. I'll leave it at that..
