I imagine, selectors and coach having a discussion.
"No, we can't pick him, he's too good and we may win the game"
"Ah you're right"
It probably went more like this.
"What about Tommy Martyn"
"No, his defense is poor, and when the going gets tough Tommy buggers off"
I know which one is closer to the truth.
But keep your red vee tinted specs on, and eventually you'll convince yourselves that Tommy was the greatest stand off ever, scored more tries than Murphy, and won Great Britain the World Cup.

Leaving backup man out of this discussion, you've got to be kidding me about the other three. Harris and Davies best positions were full back and centre. McGuire? Well let's just not embarrass the poor lad by discussing him in the same sentence as Tommy God. For a guy that, like the rest of the Wigooners, continually harps on about a deterioration in skill levels you don't half seem blind to the natural talent Tommy God had. I would never suggest he's the world's greatest but he is the most naturally talented stand off this country has produced since Tony Myler. The only other player who could say the same was Nigel Wright. Don't tell me that Nigel Wright wasn't more talented than most because I know that even you won't deny that, primarily because he signed for Wigoon and we know you will defend those players to the core.
Quote: Rogues Gallery "If as you suggest he was so good why did Hanley want rid?'"
Because Hanley had no idea what he was doing. Tommy God won the players' player in the season that Hanley left.
Quote: Rogues Gallery "And as to his last try at Central park for the losing side, who played Tommy off the Park that day?'"
I don't know. Who did play Tommy God off the park, at home, in an emotional final game at Central Park? Who scored a hat trick of tries in a virtuoso performance, at the JJB after you were leading 16-0 after quarter of an hour, against the best Wigoon side there's ever been in Super League?
Quote: Rogues Gallery "That should tell you a lot about tippling Tommy. Outdone by Chester and then by Julian O'Neil.'"
Sean Long outplayed Lockyer in Sydney, so what?

| Quote: Rogues Gallery "Isn't Edwards now one of the most respected rugby coaches?'"
Even Paul Cullen has had success coaching in the lower levels of British rugby, which is exactly where Edwards is now. If he wanted a real challenge he'd take up the reins at Wigoon. He doesn't. He wants a job where his minute RL knowledge contributes significantly to his success. He'd flop in league as I've said a million times before and I would like nothing better than to see him steer yourselves in circles around the same sea of mediocrity you've been in since Raper left.

| Quote: Rogues Gallery "Absolute rubbish.
Edwards, the man who WON more winners medals than any other player, scored more tries than any other halfback, captained his club and country, led the ONLY English club team to victory in Australia the WCC, and he was according to you, just a support player.
If it was so easy, why didn't others do it?'"
It ought not be difficult to pick up a barrow full of medals captaining a team that cherry-picked most of the best players in the league (bankrupting itself in the process) and putting them on full-time contracts in a semi-pro league. They might as well have given him the medals before a ball was kicked.
Quote: Rogues Gallery "And as for the coaching, what are the coaches doing now who picked Martyn in their team.'"
All coaches (perhaps excluding Bennett) have a sell-by date. John Monie broke all manner of records coaching Wigan - where is he today? I mean, what point are you struggling to make?

You always seem to put across a good argument based on facts not opinion.
i don't know if you remember when the pie eaters were calling for Edwards head for nigh on 2 seasons. Yes the greatlt honoured well respected Sean Edwards was batterred week in week out by them , on GMR & any other medium that was prepared to listen.
Don't remember too many Saints fans calling for Tommy's head .

I don't remember that happening, and even if it did what has that to do with the comparison between a Rugby League legend in Edwards and a journeyman in Martyn.
Did different coaches pick Edwards for Great Britain?
Did different coaches reject Martyn for Great Britain?
In 50 or more years which one do you think will be remembered?
What it shows is that Martyn was a good player, Edwards was a great player.

11659.jpg Phil Bentham scoured the video tape and despite conclusive evidence that Smith was a half yard offside, he allowed the try to stand.

Saints are a big-game team with bags of big-game experience. They have won five Challenge Cups from six final appearances in the Super League era and have won five Grand Finals in that time too.
Add two World Club Championships to that and you have the roll-call of the best rugby league team this country has produced in the modern-era - and it's a phenomenal record.

Your correct about his lack of pace, and he was a poor defender.'"
Those grapes are so sour.
He was despised by Wiganers because he was the scourge of them. Had some blinders against the pies.
You just can't admit how good he was even now after years out of the game.
How about his blind pass to Peter Shiels against the Goons in another derby I think.
You make no reference to his fantastic rugby brain and kicking game as well, you are a bitter and twisted troll sir.

| The was nothing wrong with tommys defence. He defended just as good as any halfback if not better.
His rugby brain made up for his lack of pace and you knew he would always try something different when needed.
No matter what rogues says tommy was utter pure class who missed many GB games as he had a knack of getting injured when GB played.
Let's not forget that tommy was a regular for his country.

He was a good club journeyman, no more no less.
Another Parry Gordon.
