Exactly, he's shot, he has virtually none of his attributes that made him so great, retire with some grace, and as a legend

Quote: wakey_saint "Makinson is a great player as a winger, but showed earlier in season he is better out there finishing tries (what he does best) than in the line trying to pass the ball. Twice this season (Hull KR away and Catalans at home IIRC) his poor decision making cost us in very good attacking positions and could have won had different options been taken. Leave him on the wing where he is best suited and most effective.'"

I agree. I don't think makinson showed that he has the ability and skill set to play FB.

Who plays 6 is going to be dependent upon how we want to play. If we are splitting the HBs then Wilkin might play a ball handling role and we play an extra forward. Not ideal but I think that would be the best option if we fail to bring in a 6.

I'd love wheeler to be given his shot, but that's unlikely to result in a long term selection and the likes of Charnock are too young yet.

I agre 100% that makinson can't play the modern role of fullback. He can cover injuries but he's a winger. Just wish he was better with the ball. It's very rare tommy can beat a man.

He can win us penalties though. He likes to shimmy on the ground, and that has won us a penalty more than once this season. He should play to his strengths IMO.

His strength is running into open spaces and using his pace, sadly against top teams there isnt much space, certainly not returning the ball with half a team thundering towards you, that requires footwork that he so far at least hasnt demonstrated. He will be great on the wing when we start to make him those spaces i.e. when we have a proper halfback combo , a pack that goes forward and a threat from fullback in the form of a fully fit and firing Lomax (who has excellent footwork and timing)

Interesting that when we did briefly have a halfback in the team both our wingers seemed to get a lot more ball (I say seemed because that's the impression I got; I haven't checked on any stats before anyone jumps down my throat).

Pretty accurate description of Makinson, he,s improved this year under Brown. However, for me he,s still an average winger with a very limited skill set, Swift has the better potential.

I think that's a tad harsh, I remember him scoring an amazing try against Brent Webb in the gf a few years ago and skinning the Wigan centre on the outside, he's shown some glimpses of brilliance, now needs to make them more common!

It helps when he's actually given the chance. He's suffered for playing on our right, where the ball hardly goes. When he does get the ball he often does something productive with it. And he can pull off some great defence too. One effort that stands out is 2011 play off against Wigan at their place when he caught Carmont out and sent him into touch after playing with him first. Loved that, especially within the context of the game.

And he created the move that scored the winning try against Wigan this year too! With better ball (I think Walsh will help with that) he should keep getting better

Can we not do this again. It seems who ever comes through the ranks we have to start picking sides. ie x is better than y. Can't we simply support both wingers. Both have had to earn their spot under Brown.

The point is we have two decent wingers in makinson and swift, why give Ade a contract, he's way behind either

Tweet from @martinoffiah 23/08/2011: 'Must admit i did love watching Saints- Cunningham Joynt Longy Tommy then Leon, last classic RL team ever'. Even the dark side can't help but love the rebellion.:Transparent Backgrounds/Kermit%20the%20Frog.gif

If we can't bring a SO in, maybe give Lomax a go there, and move Swift to FB?
