I agree. But he might be jumping the gun a little bit there.

and their biggest crowd (this season but its nearly over) is only 12200, which must be near capacity. Where the old girl regularly got 17500 at capacity, so if its bigger crowds at home games hes going to the wrong place

the last thing he's bothered about is the size of the crowds at Bath FFS ! he's there for the dosh - anything else ie.England glory will be a big bonus along with the image rights etc
There's a lot of money floating around the RU world nowadays and he wants a slice of it,and good luck to him - I wish it was me !

| My cousin played at School with Ste Borthwick, who played at Bath for the early part of his career.
He said it was a real goldfish bowl - everyone in the town knew him and was interested in him.
Bath is a RU equivalent of St Helens or Widnes. Small town, one team, one sporting interest.

| IMO there'll be a few more making the switch to RU unless the international RL scene really picks up. England are nowhere near Australia/New Zealand but are miles in front of France/Wales/Ireland/Fiji/Samoa/Tonga/PNG. Thus leaving England RL in limbo so to speak.
No-one will care about international RL until the international side starts competing alongside Australia and New Zealand. Then the other nations start competing too.
However, thats a pipe dream, for that to happen would take a decade or more, therefore leaving the RU convert door wide open.

Come back when we have our new stadium and make the comparison . . . . . I'd imagine Bath will be at least 1,000 on average down on Saints.'"

My sentiments exactly mate.
The RLIF have to get the International game in order if the game is to progress.

| I spent years playing Union for Ormskirk. There wasn't a single member of the club (I can think of) that would give a toss about club rugby union. We'd get a decent crowd in the bar for internationals, but that was as much motivated by the up factor.
There were more than a few of us who supported either Saints or Wigan, though. In fact, if Saints were to send a club like us 1/2 dozen tickets every so often, I'm sure they'd get snapped up and some new potential supporters would get introduced to the sport.
There are loads of amature rugby union clubs, full of guys who'll do the same thing - turn up to the club bar to watch a Union International game, only to spend the majority of time chatting with only one eye on the game.
There's 3 union clubs within spitting distance of my house in south liverpool, which is very handy for attending games at Widnes. Get them contacted and get some free tickets out - once they've been to a couple of games, likely hood is they'll be hooked. EVen if they don't pay for their tickets at first, they'll still be getting a pie and a pint.

If that's the case, it might be worth e-mailing the club and letting them know.

| I was seething when I saw that interview and my initial reaction was to rail at Eastmond and call him all the names under the sun. But why?
If it were any other walk of life, I would applaud a talented, ambitious young man for taking an opportunity like that - something that he wants to do, earn more money, self development etc etc. It's because I am so passionate about RL (and utterly irritated by RU) that this whole situation hurts so much.
It is St Helens RLFC, Super League (Europe) and the RFL that should be answering for this, not one player. RU probably is a bigger sport. Participation - bigger. Money - bigger. Profile - bigger. International game - bigger. When they start taking our talent it is the icing on the cake.
But it isn't better. RL is never going to be soccer, but it shouldn't be losing a competitive battle with an inferior game.

GOOD POST MATE .It certainly is not a better game than our's,but on another subject I think Eastmond could have played his final game for Saints after that interview

And its not just the seniors, the minis & juniors at Ormskirk have over a hundred kids playing there on Sundays - All of whom have no local professional Union team to watch.

Union know that the big bucks will come to them and support their game because they have a well organised and well supported International game. They know the TV revenue will roll in for it and they present it very well. Most fans of RL sadly want to keep it on the M62 let alone build it into a national or genuine internationalsport. Fans moan about the media attention Union get and RL doesn't but as long as RL has this parochial view it will not change. Quins are trying to expand the game down south against huge obstacle but instead of getting encouragement for the positive achivements in terms of youth development and local community work they prefer to knock them because they havn't yet got the crowds the Northern teams have. Never heard Union fans knock their own sport. Union fans would never do this - they see the bigger picture for their sport. I would guess Italy don't get big crowds in comparison to the Welsh, English and French but I have never heard it being mentioned, but when they beat the French all of them were full of praise as if England had won it.

I'm not sure about 'most' but certainly there is a significant number of RL fans who are as parochial as you suggest. Thankfully, in terms of expansion within the British game, the RFL is taking no notice of them. Long may that continue. I've had many an argument with the parochial types over the critical importance of expanding the game as well as supporting the international game. Alas, until the English team looks remotely competitive, it is unlikely that many fans will turn out in support. Personally, I think support should be given whether the team is competitive or not as it is our country we are talking about. But there are many who don't share my view.
