| There appears to be a bit of a campaign going on Twitter to get the man of steel award renamed as the Steve Prescott man of steel.
I rather like that idea.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday but didn't post it as it seemed little weird as these things usually happen when someone has passed.
I'd like the Harry Sunderland to named the steve Prescott award. I don't know the history of the Harry Sunderland but when I think of the grand final I always think of him doing one of his crazy charity events.
Would be nice touch.

| I have complete sympathy for Steve and so much respect, but if we named an award fro the many players who have gone through suffering, one comes to mind, who I have supported a lot, through a rugby injury in a game, and he does so much fundraising from a wheelchair, we would simply run out of awards.

Whilst I'm inclined to agree in principle. Names do get attached to awards, Harry Sunderland, Albert Goldthorpe Medal etc...
I would not suggest one person is better than another, but there is no harm in changing or adding to these names. It's a bit like the £10 notes arguement, we change the names on there, it does not mean the people displayed are better worse etc, just that a variety of people should get recognition.
Also it maybe nice to recognise people whilst they are still alive and kicking, rather than postumously.
With all these things they get done on an ad hoc basis, there is no way to judge on a value basis and maybe there should not be, there are many people who should get honours and setting them up in some kind of league table of worthiness would be a bit distastful and get away from the point of attaching an honour to them.
As it is, man of steel has no name attached to it, so it should put no ones nose out of place. Plus I can think of lots of other awards, that could have names attached to them.

Not always though. We have McManus Way but Mr Big is still very much alive and kicking!
While I take the point that there are lots of people who do lots of things all worthy of recognition, I think Steve Prescott has shown an incredible amount of steel, above and beyond the usual, not only to deal with a particularly nasty form of cancer (not that any form of cancer is nice but some are less nasty than others in terms of suffering to the living) but while doing so has achieved so much on behalf of others, not just in the money he has raised but in doing things such as setting up the St Helens 10K and the Pride of St Helens awards. He has stood out in recent memory as someone who has made a special contribution to life while suffering so much in his own life that I think he stands above others. Also, many, many people - even those who have suffered or are suffering themselves - have said he is an inspiration to them.
I'm going to write to the RFL and suggest it.

Should Saints v Hull be played as pre season friendly for the Prescott Cup with the proceeds going to Steves charity?

That's a really good idea.
FWIW, Steve was an inspiration to me in the early 90s. I was always very light as a young player, but Precky showed me that you could get away with being slight if you had the footwork and the skill, which of course he had in spades.
Obviously the respect I've always had for him has gone to stratospheric levels with all of the incredible resilience and class he has displayed over the last few years.

I'm not sure, I was never keen on the Cunnignham statue, I would rather have seen one of a group of players representing different era's, rather than such a current player.
It is difficult naming awards, some family is going to be hurt if their son is not recognised.
