| The man deserves respect.
He left 2 young children and a wife.
Life is about more than rugby.

Correct
Just a plea.
If some numbnuts decide to disrespect the silence then leave them to it. It will only make matters worse if we all start shouting "shut up" etc
It will also make it easier to identify them and hopefully get them ejected.

| Quote: Rogues Gallery "Correct
I agree.
I hated Newton, absolutely hated the bloke as a rugby player because I knew he would do whatever it took to see Wigan win the game. Many people feel the word 'hate' is too strong, it isn't. I hated him on the field for Wigan. However, the key point is that there is a difference between a rugby pitch and life. As much as I hated him as a player, I would never ever wish anybody to feel so low that they need to end their life. It is made all the more tragic because he had young children. He was a fine foe and the pantomine villain and that is all. He was clearly a good man, the people who knew him that have spoken since his death have shown this. For me the RFL should be ashamed for leaving people in his situatuon out in the cold and I hope the game learns from it.
I feel that tomorrow will give the opportunity for decent people to show respect, as I and the majority will do so. However there will be the numpties who don't. All that will show is the idiotics in life who have have no common decency whatsoever. Furthermore, I suspect Newton would have loved it and he'll be up there praying it helps Wigan to victory.
Life is a competition and Newton lived it. Lets hope the game pulls together and respects the man and the player.

| I will be honouring the minutes silence, Terry Newton wore his heart on his sleeve and put everything he had into a game of rugby league, I didnt agree with everything he did but one cant deny his committment to the sport.
RIP Terry.

I have no issue with the rest of your post, but this bit is balls. He was found to be cheating and was subsequently banned, quite correctly. His situation was created by himself and no one else, this was no accident or untimely end to his career through injury. He cheated and was caught.
I've been away and have been catching up on the last few weeks of Boots and All - The Tries, on the latest edition Terry O'Connor states that he had been in regular contact with him and had spoken to him as recently as the Saturday prior to his death, and that Newton had seemed fine to him in all that contact. If his own close mates did not have an inclining of what he was contemplating, why should the RFL be ashamed of what happened? If he has problems it is down to him and his family to seek appropriate help, possibly even his club, not the RFL. If, as has apparently been reported, he had already been on anti depressants then he was already seeing a doctor about it anyway, what should the RFL have done?

What a strange post, "The man deserves respect. He left 2 young children and a wife." If he deserves respect for anything, it most certainly isn't for leaving 2 young children and a wife, unless they really are better off without him?

I was thinking the same thing. Very odd post indeed but i think it's safe to say he must have been pretty ill to go and do what he did.
I have the deepest sympathy for his family

| I was dreading the minutes silence, and expected Saints' fan base to be tarnished by the actions of a sizeable proportion of an ale fuelled crowd.
Gladly as fans we were magnificent, despite the fact that the majority of us despised the guy on the field for some of the most blatant and premeditated acts of thuggery I've ever seen in a game of RL.
Fantastic that, despite the drink and the emotion of the occasion, we were able to rise above a cheap shot which would have seriously damaged the rep. of the club and realise that the rugby player doesn't necessarily represent the man.
As above, deepest sympathy for the family.

I'm amazed at just how many people from Saints and elsewhere underestimated our fan base. I wasn't at all surprised that we honoured the minute's silence so perfectly because we always do, more often than not for people we have never even heard of never mind seen play!

| Slightly off topic but Terry Newton related.
What a fantastic gesture by Adrian Morley yesterday to be one of the "carriers" of Newtons coffin.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. and the England players were due to fly out New Zealand yesterday.

I was worried about the "two games a season" crowd, who orchestrated the Newton chants each time he faced us. Not the real rugby fans, there was never a doubt they'd behave impeccably whatever their personal thoughts on Newton.
Quote: SaintsFan " I wasn't at all surprised that we honoured the minute's silence so perfectly because we always do, more often than not for people we have never even heard of never mind seen play!'"
Aye, we'd heard of Newton alright. He was the guy who put paid to Saints GF hopes in 2005 with some disgraceful acts of thuggery, because his own team were being knocked out by us.
That was exactly the reason I was concerned of a beer fuelled reaction from a loud minority.

Did all the england players delay flying to New Zealand yesterday or was it just Morley?

I think they all flew in the evening as O'Loughlin was also at Newtons funeral.

Fielden has also delayed his departure on a brighter note as his wife is due to give birth any time now! Should have been induced Wednesday but this has been delayed.
