| Quote: theres only one stan wall "Foster isnt even stand out at reserve grade level. Appears to have this "ive made it attitude" the hairdressers deco tells you all you need to know about him. You'd think he was a veteran test player. No speed or size, heart of a gnat but can kick goals. Can go tommorrow for me, Swift, Jones & Percival all better players without the side show. Seems to spend more time on the golf course than the gym or training pitch. Not seen anywhere near the desire to get back into the first team as I would have envisaged.'"
so, was the same Jamie Foster last season when socoring some superb tries and kicking like a veteran a bad player then ?
so actually he was a good (ish) player but is now a load of crap, is that it ?
he's become a bad player in a season ?
why can't we positive about someones ability (or lack of) until proven otherwise ?

Not true, and given that Makinson is younger than Foster and has yet to actually play in the first team for a year your statement is even more ridiculous.
Foster was very good for the period he played in 2010 and for last season. He went to pieces this season for whatever reason. Makinson, meanwhile, is also looking very good. It is a great shame he was injured last week as that will surely rule him out of playing against Wigan and since he was one of our best players against Wigan last time we will miss him.

Purely based on rugby i dont think he's good enough, even his kicking has gone downhill this year and Makinson isnt a bad kicker either. I hope im wrong and he comes back and rips the league apart, but i cant see it'"
Didn't someone on here predict that the "golden generation " of youth wouldn't all make it?
I'm sure someone said that foster, Dixon, ashurst would end up playing at Salford and I'm sure that person was crucified on here for saying it.

No, absolutely 100% true. As usual it's a truth you've decided you want to ignore as Makinson is irrevocably locked in your "good player regardless" column while Foster goes in the other inescapable category, but no less a truth nevertheless. Foster was a scoring machine in his first year with ball and boot, solid in defence, utterly bulletproof under bombs and generally impressive in all respects. Makinson has been inconsistent and usually a bit unthreatening and average looking in the same spell (although admittedly on Saints' desolate, dusty, windswept wing). Pace aside (and I do appreciate that that is the only attribute the numpty brigade are ever capable of judging any player on, especially backs, and so that alone makes him automatically a better player than Foster could ever be) he generally looks a lesser player right now than Foster did 12 months ago.

Me too actually, on many an occasion. And yes, you do get mocked and derided when you point out that 18/19 year olds who come in and have a good spell in the team don't usually end up with a career at the top of SL 5 years later and that a more level-headed assessment of their prospects is needed and experienced quality players retained as well, but I have the inner warmth of always being right to comfort me through such times. Meanwhile, let's all clamour for Meli, Wilkin, Perry and Shenton to be booted out the door immediately unceremoniously and for them be permanently replaced by Makinson, Gaskell, Dixon and Jones instead, eh?

You are talking childish tosh again.
I've been a supporter of Jamie Foster on here ever since he made his debut in the first team under Potter. That is widely known and widely evidenced.
I am also a supporter of Tommy Makinson. That is also widely known and widely evidenced. We will miss Makinson against Wigan on Sunday.

If the youth system can bring through a good player every year or two, then it's doing ok. The wish for it to produce 5 or 6 good players every year is pie in the sky.

Exactly!
You've got to be very very lucky to produce a home grown kids that goes on and wins things like Leeds did.
It irritates the crap out of me when I see/hear people go on about we don't needed to replace certain players as we've got a 20 year old kid that's played 10 first team games to replace them.
I think most saints fans bought into the the whole youth thing that saints was spinning but at the end of the day it was us doing things on the cheap.
I remember a game few years back when we beat cas at home and fielded a pretty young team and this board went into melt down. When I stated that prob one or two will ever make it to super league level I was slated!
Few years on and I think only lomax is still playing

Lots of people - last season anyway - enjoyed seeing local lads given a chance and IMO that was one reason why we had our biggest turnout at a GF in years. I know a lot of people who really got a buzz from supporting a team made up of so many St Helens born and/or raised (rugby league wise) players.

It does give you a buzz especially when you've seen them play for liked of brook and progress to the first team but you've got to be lucky to produce a teal of local talent.
We've had tyrer as the next Jamie Lyon, ashurst/Dixon as the next joynt etc

| Wellens, roby, lomax, clough. 4 players who have come through the system and can be said to have made it. We can then add maybe 10 more potential players, but again we will be lucky if one or two actually make it.
